cassadee: i called then they said there server crashed and that there haveing to get a new one thats why they have limited our download speed if they did not do this then web pages ect would take forever to load

Their server crashed? The Global Gateway server, or the Telecom server?
Why can they not just put us through a different server whilst it's being fixed?
Seems fair.

If that's true (and people have got lots of different answers from different CSR's already so far) then surely it would have been better for their reputation to issue a clear consistent official network status update, twitter announcement and/or email notification before implementing an across the board rate shape on international http downloads.

Also I believe they run a stack of Blue Coat hardware for traffic management, so this sounds like yet another incorrect statement by a CSR.

Ragnor: That CSR's response is a palm off, Global Gateway is part of Telecom.

Surely international bandwidth is a sunk cost for Telecom at any point in time they have X users on Big Time and Y Mbit/s available to those on the plan at Z contention ratio.

It's simply a matter of getting the management rules right (they are fairly broken atm, even before http rate shaping was implemented).

I agree alot of the emo rants and insults are not helpful at all, however much of it could be curtailed by clearer communication by Telecom.

I can't be more specific, but no, Intl BW is not a simple sunk cost to Telecom. I wish it was that simple.

What's most frustrating is the personal abuse being flung around (moreso on GPforums than here) when the people involved with the product are trying damn hard to find a set of rules that will work.

Someone on GPforums suggested direct action as a protest, and suggested (without smilies) setting fire to Telecom Employees' homes to draw attention to their unhappiness with the plan.

Unfortunately when the mob mentality degenerates to that level, there's little benefit in me trying to have a rational discussion anymore.

I'm a bigtime user myself and I would like a workable long term solution, but I don't expect my ISP to provide a service at a loss to themselves, just like I wouldn't expect my gas station to sell me petrol at a loss, or bank to charge me negative interest on my mortgage. (And don't even think about talking about a "loss-leader" product - BT doesn't qualify)

Cheers - N

LOL - Telecom's Level2 technicians just told me that they're (Telecom) is not
affiliated with "the company who manages traffic".

So... in other words a Level 2 technician from everyone's favorite New Zealand ISP just lied his life away to me... How suprising!

GP has always been fairly low brow without strict moderation, that's part of it's charm.  People of a less mature age will always go over the top with anonymous rants on internet forums.

I don't think you can take them seriously at all.

Understandable, but where's the communication?  Why a international http rate shape across the board for everyone instead of targetting the users using 1.5TB a month?

Punishing people using 40-100 GB mostly in off peak because other people are using 1.5TB a month doesn't make sense to me.

The 1.5TB a month sort of guys are already using work arounds to bypass the shaping, so really this is just hurting the "legit" users on the plan.

Probably you won't be able to make specific comments on these sort of questions, but this is CRM 101 sort of stuff and it's disappointing Telecom are rocking it dark ages school.

Ragnor, my point exactrly - there are other people on Big Time who are using it exclusively to download HUGE files per month (I am not one of these people), but I do like to download the odd thing via http, and everyone is being punished for this now, but it is a problem which is being worked on, and I have been "assured" that it will be going back to normal.

nzpossum, they DID confirm that the problem is not held within Telecom, and it has been escalated to a Level 3 problem now (which is aparently the highest).
They acknowledged that they're going to be offering Big Time customers some form of rebate after this problem is fixed, but they also admitted that the problem is NOT permanent and will be corrected.

However,  they said that they do not have any ETA on the recovery of the problem, though 2-3 weeks is more than likely.

Thanks for the update Mortiis. As for who is doing 1.5TB a month, that would not be impossible for extreme rapidshare downloaders but would be rare as you would have to be downloading almost 24/7. The most data i have used in 1 month was about 350GB. Usually i do between 80-120GB.
