A note on handsets with different chipsets...

I was told that it comes down to the chipset makers, to the patent holders and how much money they can cream out of the handset making industry - for the most part they WANT a limited number of frequencies per chipset because that way they can sell more chips.

Hence the multiple SKUs based around the perceived demand for frequencies - 900/2100 goes together, 850/1900 goes together predominantly because of the larger markets and their needs.

It's only fairly recently (since the iPhone 4 I suggest) that demand for a phone capable of multi frequencies has reached the point where the chip makers are happy to make pentaband or more.

The idea that Vodafone or 2Degrees or anyone specifically buys handsets that exclude Telecom XT is a red herring - there simply aren't that many handsets out there that have that kind of capability.

freitasm: It means we will have to create a forum just for them...

You could probably start it now with a sticky post that answers the same-old, same-old questions that will be asked again and again by the skinny people who 'just got my new fone and it won't work with my old SIM'

akia: ...their own technology and service platforms, and very definitely their own way of doing things.

Interesting. So did they use the Customer feature in NCC to create a Skinny environment within Telecom's hardware, or did they buy a whole new one?

Please note we have now created a subforum for Skinny only. Do not use the Telecom subforum to discuss Skinny products/services.

I noted at lunchtime that ZM is already running a promo with Skinny Mobile, heard they are looking at launching early Jan

I think Skinny is a bit iffy in conjunction with their target audience..

So the network as per this official skinny letter I have in my hand states that the service will start in December. It's a prepaid only service. Minimum top up amount is $5. Has the lowest calling rates in NZ and the combo plans looks like will run weekly. It will run on the XT network. The customers would need to go to www.skinny.co.nz for any help. Looks like the number suffix for Skinny is 020.

Hmm very interesting. I do remember now someone said that their suffix could be 0204/020 and we talked about Orcon using 020 also. This should be good then, great timing for Christmas then if they do launch in December. A lot of new teens with phones/cash for phones. Cant wait :D

Do they offer micro-sims? ;D

No information provided about where to buy SIM's from at this stage. They do talk about data plans in the letter as well. I rang the number and all heard was a busy line tone.

Orcon, Vodafone, Telecom and TeamTalk have all been allocated numbers in the 020 range.
