They tried this before and pulled it (Boost mobile). Telecom is terrible at this kind of "innovative" new services - look at ferrit

It's nothing about "innovation", it's about delivering a brand that can offer cheaper pricing without cannibalising the existing Telecom pricing model. Large number of carriers do this, and Aussie is a classic example with a number of MVNO's, and those such as Virgin that are fully owned by Optus.

Whether you agree with this idea or not comes down to your views on marketing. Many marketing people will tell you pitching a brand to cover every possible consumer type, while maintaining significant pricing differentials is very hard.

Yes, there is no question that its owned by Telecom.

Looking at the whois data its owned by some "Wellington Harbour Holdings Limited" and "ajpark.co.nz" but it has ish5.telecom.co.nz and ish4.telecom.co.nz set as the DNS servers. Visiting https://www.skinny.co.nz/ we can look at the certificate details and see that its a Class 3 certificate issued by VeriSign (meaning that the owner was most likely validated in some way) on 6th November 2011 to "Telecom Corporation of New Zealand Limited".

A quick trademark search for Skinny* turns up a bunch of trademarks that have either been issued to or are pending issue to TELECOM IP LIMITED. Here is some information on NZ Trademark #839566 which is still under examination:

Many companies do this. Look at domain registrars, many have different brands, and very different pricing, to compete in the different markets, all operated under the single company.

If theres something that can replace my current smartphone double plan (5000 texts, 480mb data for $28) then i'll happily change to it.
Tis annoying that no one wants to cater to the $30 price point for smartphones, i want roughly 500mb of data, and perhaps a good few hundred texts (ideally 500+).

I see, $10 2500 txt pack and $20 1GB data. The only trouble with that is you've got to be in a 2degrees broadband zone which is patchy to say the least

Well, it's getting less patchy by the day. This year we've added Hamilton, Tauranga, Hastings, Wanganui, Whangarei, and Palmerston North, with more to come both this year and next. Some of them aren't "officially" broadband zones yet, but as long as you are within the 2degrees coverage, it works.
