Yep, missing the rest of the country. 2100 will be in main centres, but as soon as you hit the sticks, it is 850 - which could be an advantage, no phone at the holiday spot :)

I'm not sure what you mean - there is no "850 2G" outside the main centres.

Telecom's network is 100% WCDMA at both 850 and 2100. There is no GSM component. The GSM network that is live at present will all be pulled.

If you use a phone on Telecom's network that doesn't do 850 WCDMA you will have very patchy coverage.

it all sounds very exciting for the new network!

Well you will be getting 850MHz no G if the phone has no UMTS-850...

But really if I can get 2100 as good as vodafone around the city, except they get coverage into malls then it will be fine, CDMA wont die overnight and I can always carry my cheap nokia for the odd drive between civilization...

The catch here is the handsets seem to either be 2100/900 or 2100/850; I haven't seen any 2100/900/850.
This means in main centres, you can swap no problem as it is mainly 2100 3G.
Out of main centres, it is more of an issue;
- Vodafone (2100/900) --> Telecom = no coverage
- Telecom (2100/850) --> Vodafone = no 3G coverage, but you will get 2G coverage.

That is correct as there are no chipsets that currently support both - a couple of vendors have roadmaped the chipsets but that is a few years off. The other issue is handset availability at W900 not many arround W850 has much better options due to leadership from AT&T and Telstra Australia. Should be fixed by the time TNZ launch and with a bit of luck VF will pull finger and finish their build. big challenge for VF is the cost of backhaul (TNZ put the backhaul costs upfront in their CAPEX forecast).

That is 100% correct. Have a look at the Telstra Australia NextG web site to see which phones are available there as that is what TNZ are copying. If you travel overseas make certain that it is quad band GSM too. Interestingly as the iPhone 3G is W2100/W850 it will work better on TNZ than VF. VF users will drop back to GSM (with Edge if you are lucky in rural) where TNZs Network (if it gets built on time) will deliver ubiquitous 3G coverage.

The Sony Ericsson K850i seems to be able to do all GSM and UMTS frequencies? This would be a great phone for New Zealand if wanting to move between Telecom and Vodafone from June and into the future? It does:
UMTS 850 1900 2100
GSM 850 900 1800 1900

Yea, but no UMTS 900 which is what Vodafone are using for their 3G coverage outside major centres so you'll be stuck with GPRS speeds on GSM900 with them.

It seems to me with the current phones in the market, and Telecom and Vodafone using some different frequencies for their networks we are still not at the truely interchangeable networks here that many other countries (particularly Europe) have where there are handsets available which operate on all frequencies in use in those countries.

Vodafone currently falls back to GPRS. They could have EDGE but never deployed or enabled anything - although some people reported seeing "E" on their handsets sometime ago.

There is a hardware component to EDGE as well. The increased throughput (above MCS-4) makes use 8PSK RF modulation instead of GMSK, so depending on the capability of Voda's existing GSM base stations there might be a hardware upgrade required.

Virtually all of the gear that Vodafone has installed over the past few years is EDGE capable. There have been rumors that Vodafone were going to enable EDGE this year but nothing has come of that.

Group have always been very anti EDGE ever since it was deployed and up until last year no Vodafone network had ever switched on EDGE - until Vodafone UK magically started enabling it across their network late last year. This was what started fuelling many of rumors that Vodafone were getting the iPhone.

GPRS/EDGE telemetry gear is still very cheap compared to WCDMA gear (and there is very little 900 WCDMA gear available) and there are large numbers of telemetry users who will continute to use GSM for many years to come.

Never has been. Isn't going to.

Would be a bit redundant with talkof HSPA+ and LTE being rolled out over the next few years.

It is... I try not to say never, but in this instance I'm pretty confident.

It wouldn't be a free build, it would cost money and frankly I can think of other places to spend that. So I'll stick to my prediction.
