1101:

your email adress is being actively targeted, thats your issue, not Sparks

My Gmail a/c gets more spam than my @xtra email a/c. By a wide margin.
IF the issue is mainly with YOUR EMAIL ADRESS , its totally unrealistic to expect @xtra to change their global spam filter setup just for your benefit.

Some spam will allways get through . Some weeks there will be more than others.
There is no magic wand to be waved to detect all spam , especially if it comes from legitimate email a/cs that have been hacked into .

Reducing spam further means getting considerably more legit email blocked.
You cant have it both ways. Pick one . How soon we forget all the complaints of xtras spam filter blocking too much legitimate email.
:-)

I will admit that the spam filter should be able to detect email spoofed as @xtra senders and at least move it to the spam folder .

That's interesting and helpful to me. Sounds fair.

When spam does get through, I go to the xtra webmail site and do two things - blacklist the sender and click on 'spam'.

What I don't understand is that some of the attempts to blacklist show as 'already in your backlist'. If that's the case, how come they get through?

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

I find that mildly baffling too. It's almost as if different parts of the system are examining different clues to the alleged sender's address.

I really am getting fed up with these Norton and Dyson spam emails so are my elderly relatives, averaging 4 per day

Yep, totally unrealistic expectations of their FREE email a/c
To block those 4 per day, would have the effect of also blocking some of your legitimate email

So pick one of these options.
Block more spam & also block legit email you need to see
or have the expectation that important legit emails MUST get through & some spam also as a consequence

Well , thats just a crappy email system isnt it.
Im sure Spark wanted to pay as little as possible for this 'free' email system .

Look at the history of years of issues with @xtra .
So go to gmail/365/outlook.com  or live with the issues , thats the real world choices you have .

btw , gmail also has some spam getting through .

@1101 Myself and My Parents still get SPAM into the inbox with Gmail but we just delete it do not go posting about it on a public forum, I have suffered no broken fingers or RSI from deleting SPAM emails

It is not just the handling of it at mine and my relatives desktop end but I also go into the server webmail and Blacklist and Spam from the end as well. That is four email addresses at least once a day sometimes twice at day. The bulk of them are Norton and Dyson related.

And everyones back full circle on the 'get over it' bandwagon again. Unsubscribing stops that urge btw :)

However, as I've said a few times here. You can't compare own experiences and or Gmail/other such alternate and try taint users still on xtra with the same 'they all get spam' brush as the SMX service (which isn't free, it costs them to manage, so happens to not be passed to end users). If do a compare - similarly to many more users on those alternate services.. Don't see any. The server might see spam - But the end users don't have to deal with it.

There's clearly a disconnect with the long term ISP held email/Yahoo/address book user database exploits in the past, and SMX's system not able to keep up with the possible additional amount jammed down the pipe as a result. While still letting through blatant ones.  When other accounts.. can.

I expect gmail and or other providers that are more popular globally, Host way more accounts than Xtra ever would have with it's specific NZ userbase. To be hammered exponentially more than the @xtra domain and still handle the jandal.

One thing you can do, is setup a test forward for them to a new test gmail acct/client. Or get gmail to do the collection. And see if the number of them drop off as the wider rules for the common Norton etc get captured.

I think the point some of us are making here is that, on xtra, spam was relatively bad a year or so ago - then it was fine - almost none, until recently. Now it’s bad again (by our definition) - so what has changed at xtra?

How soon we forget when xtras spam filter was far too aggressive & catching far too many legit emails , causing real issues.
https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/issues-with-spark-email-xtra-hitting-kiwi-businesses/RSIPYV74WVIFPWEACD2ZSCKSWA/

So , look at the long loooong history of @xtra issues . expect things to be any better  ?

On the other hand, complaining about 4 spams is totally unrealistic.
old xtra Email a/cs attract spam . You will never block all spam . 4 spams getting through is nothing .
old @xtra email address's are BEING TARGETED , dump it or live with it .

xtra spam filter DOES catch spam email that gmail filter misses , I know this as fact as my gmail is all forwarded to xtra .

THANK YOU 👏

Quite correct - what has changed at xtra/smx

Anyone else noticed that the volume of spam seems to have tapered off a little in recent days?
