12db down. I believe. Not at home right at the moment. So couldn't tell you exactly.

EDIT:

Do note it does fluctuate, sometimes all the way down to 9db. so 12 is really the maximum I've seen it at.

you reckon its possible for me to call up chorus and tell them that a rj12 port wasnt installed for me and i am still having to use adsl filters because of that, even after a splitter install.

And if they are willing to send a chorus person again, can i ask him to replace the cable or something?

cheers

You need to call your ISP and report to them that you are not happy with the install.

Why would you need to use a plug in filter? Surly they installed either a BT or an RJ45 socket? So just use the appropriate cable. Either RJ12-BT or RJ12-RJ45

Yeah they installed another bt socket and then told me to continue using the filter so the internet cable is plugged into the filter and the modem.

So the filter is just being used as an adapter from BT to RJ-12, shouldn't have any effect unless it's dodgy.

As mentioned by others if you have a BT socket then BT (old school phone) to RJ11/12 (modem plug) adapter/cable is the right solution, these cost next to nothing:
http://cablesdirect.co.nz/catalog/entry?entry=176&page_number=1

It's possible the plug in filter is the problem but more likely it's that wiring and junction box between the ETP and the new jack.

Ideally they should have put in a RJ-45 jack for the dedicated DSL jack and given you RJ-45 to RJ11/12 cable for connecting the modem, also run a fresh clean Cat5e from the ETP to the dedicated DSL jack.

Disappointing but not surprising that the Chorus tech did a half arse job given it's all contracted out and the rates are abysmal.

Hard to say whether you'd could badger your ISP to get them to send another tech to do it properly.

If you have moderate DIY skills you can tackle this yourself or get a pro in to do it right.

There is no issue using the filter. It is just simply an adapter. Alternatively, use a standard BT to RJ11 line cord.

Using a BT jack is by no means 'half arsed'. What he did is completely acceptable, the OP just has an issue using the filter as he doesn't understand what it is doing.

BT jack vs RJ45 in 2013 is debatable but lets put that aside.

The reusing of the existing 2 wire copper wiring, including that junction box instead of running a new cat5e from the ETP to the DSL jack was more what I was talking about... 28Mbit down on 13dB attenuation seems a bit low?

vdsl can be up to 70mbps down.

So, yes, if you can acheive that speed.

The best VDSL connection will usually be better than a UFB 30 plan, but there will be variance by install, distance from DSLAM and you may find your latency can change depending on what the systems that keep everything running reliably think your line should support.

All UFB 30 plans should have similar and excellent performance.

I have VDSL, syned at 42/10 and it's superb. I'd trade it for UFB30 if it was available in my area (Hurry up Enable!)

Short answer, if you can get Fibre, get it... If you can't - and VDSL is available - it's a huge step up from ADSL2+ if you want the upload performance or you download lots of illegal media. (I was going to say Linux ISOs but meh)

Cheers - N
