Hi Again.

Being new to this, I'm not sure if I answer people individually, or all at once.   No doubt when I get it wrong, ( usually ), someone will point it out [ always!].   Thanks for the notes on layout GRANT17.   I know your're right.    'Readability is everything', as Rupert Murdoch once said.    [Actually, he may not have done, but it sounds plausible.]

Jama.....you say that Telecom has agreements with most CDMA operators.........but not with most countries!   It really doesn't matter to me who they have agreements with, as long as I can use my phone there.....and in most places I visit, I can't use the Telecom phone.  It has to be the Vodaphone.   Even Bradstewart says that 'Roaming is a pain'.......so not everyone is happy with the current arrangements.

But Brad does say that the SAMSUNG W531 gives you both.   Which it may well do.   But that is precisely my point.   Getting into bed with the opposition may be convenient, and sometimes expedient, but isn't always the best solution in terms of credibility.   [And the wife may not like it. ]   But I'm well aware that the technological considerations are'nt the only ones in these decisions.  In fact, I'm sure the commercial, political, economic and whatever else you care to think of........come before the technical ones, in many cases.     Ask Sony.   But that's another story.

As for Mclayma, who accuses me of getting on a soapbox,  [ apart from saying "Well said, Brad " !],  I thought airing views and opinions in a Website forum was the Internet equivalent of the old ' Letters To The Editor.....' [Disgusted of Tonbridge Wells......and all that.......]        If you want to say something, then a Website Forum IS the soapbox.....................which is only to give a platform to be heard, after all.......

Or have I got that wrong too ?

Well, some others like to use Geekzone to ask for cracks and activation codes, but for some strange reason they don't get very far.

Jama: BTW - The government dished out the spectrum. They gave 900MHz to BellSouth and 800MHz to Telecom. 800 was used for AMPS/TDMA (American technology) and the natural upgrade path was CDMA

Telecom also purchased 900Mhz (ETACSbut later renamedGSM) spectrum and subsequently lost it. During the spectrum salesBellSouth, Telecom Australia and Telecom NZ purchased ETACS bands and Telecom NZ also purchased the second AMPS band. Telecom were told by the court they couldn't have both the 2nd AMPS band and a ETACS band andthe American interests who saw DAMPS as the future gave up the ETACS band in return for 100% of the AMPS spectrum in NZ.

Many would arge it was the biggest mistake Telecom NZ made - internally they realised by the mid 90's that GSM was the way go but unfortunately Telecom had no spectrum to roll out GSM and the 1800MHz GSM bands weren't allocated then. Had Telecom hadthe ETACS spectrum band I'm sure we'd now have two GSM operators in NZ now.

Actually not quite true. The 025 network was launched in August 1987. At that time Telecom was still an SOE (State Owned Enterprise). Telecom wasn't sold to the Americans until 1990.

According to Roderick Deane in a recent National Business Review interview the National government forced Telecom to sell its GSM spectrum.

This occured around 1991 or 1992 well after the 025 network was deployed. After Telecom purchased the spectrum the government at the time gave Telecom a choice - keep the ETACS and hand back the 2nd AMPS band or keep the 2nd AMPS band and hand back the ETACS. From memory Telecom challenged this in court and lost. The Ameritech influence dictated the decision Telecom made which was to give up the ETACS spectrum because it didn't believe that GSM had a future - remembering the only GSM network in the world at the time was Vodafone UK's network which was not operational at the time.

I have a document around somewhere detailing it, I'll have to try and find it.

The Geekzone forums also cater for those wanting help, instant gratification..... and those wanting to have a rant.

Nairda............

I didn't say it was ONLY a Soapbox.      Of course a forum has lots of other functions.  Which is why it's called a Forum.   Ask Frankie Howerd.  [My Grandad told me about him !]

A Forum is a bit like Telecom.   A company of many parts.   [ Not many of them working !]

Some of us dont like sim cards and vodafones insistance on selling new ones all the time rather then reactivating ones that I already have. Gimme a number I can program into the phone any day of the week over a sim.

What are you people doing with your SIM cards? I have the same SIM card since 1999. And it has been on many handsets, smartphones, Pocket PCs, data cards since then...

Hello Richms.   You're obviously a night-owl, like me !

With regard to your post, I hadn't realised that Vodafone wouldn't reactivate sims.   The only experience I've had of anything of that nature was when I lost one, and had to get a new one 'blown' to the same number for $12.50..........which was done with no problem.

But it's not that I particularly like SIM Cards......only the ability to move them from handset to handset as and when I want to, and the ability to use my phone in virtually any other country in the world, which I certainly can't do with the CDMA based Telecom system.

Your point is surely essentially a criticism of the Company and the way it operates, not the technology.

Can you point out any CDMA providers (instead of just blaming Telecom) that have RUIM (sim like devices) that allow you to swap phones and use imported handsets?

I believe only a Chinese operator uses RUIM

Often when you lose the phone, the cost to replace the simcard is more then the cost to replace the phone that it was in. The extra airtime doesnt apply if its a sim that is replacing another, only get that for a new connection.

Yes, I lose a lot of phones, which is why I typically jump to get any phones that people I know are about to "recycle" via the boxes in stores.

No.

Bradstewart says the Chinese, but I don't really know of any.

But I think you're missing my point.  I not blaming Telecom for that.   I'm just saying they backed the wrong horse, at a time when they had the choice of either.   As always, I'm sure there were other pressures and considerations involved, but nevertheless, i think they got it wrong..

And I think THEY think they got it wrong.

I'm sure you could do a deal with the store, and for $10 you'd get the lot.

A never ending supply.

You could probably sell them on 'Trademe' for $5  EACH and retire!!

Whether or not they backed the wrong technology is an interesting question, which is sure to merit more discussion. While some may disagree with me, I personally think that CDMA is not a dead horse yet despite the doomsayers commenting on the Telstra closure.

However with the starting post you make it out to be Telecom trying to lock customers by removing the 'no sim card' option while a lot of CDMA providers don't even have that option. Your last post differs from the "... with their monopolistic 'No Sim Card' policies" quite a bit which is promising to see.

In any case, I enjoy having a CDMA handset which allows me to enjoy better connectivity outside of the major centers and even on the plain old CDMA 1X - the speeds are still better than GPRS which at times can be better or worse than dialup.
