Funny enough I will be ringing Telecom today to order this, and I live in an apartment (Newmarket, Auckland).  I have OK ADSL speeds (12down) but I know part of the problem is due to high attenuation because of the cabling going into an alarm first, and the 5 jackpoints in the apartment.  coffeebaron fixed the cabling in my last place so I picked up a lot about what to do, and luckily the apartments are cabled with CAT5, so a Master Splitter before the alarm should yield nice VDSL speeds.


You should be able to ask the team to install based on the master filter lowering your line attenuation to under 10dB, if not I'd say CoffeeBaron will have a busy week hah.

Availability checker says ok. If I order and they turn up and decide the line is not good enough will I still have to pay the installer?

Already have a master splitter.

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 15,7 / 24,5

Or with those figures should I not even bother trying?

Although I do get a good 13Mbps down and 1Mbps up.

So I put my address in and it says I can have it.  Click through the website and after putting my phone number in only gives me ADSL as a option.  I presume once you enter your phone number a line check is done?  Big disappointment.

A plan with pricing and performance that I would want to switch to. I would have signed up except that I was offered a big discount from my current ISP, Vodafone, when I phoned them to find out my contract term dates and disconnection charges.

Is it a case of taking the old plate off and using the wiring to install a new plate?


Generally it involves installing a master splitter at your ETP (or as close to the road as possible) then running a new cable from that to a dedicated DSL jackpoint. Your modem then plugs into that jackpoint, and is isolated from the other wiring on your premises.  

(You might find your place is already sorted, but yeah I've heard flats\apartments can be a challenge ;-) )

Hmmm......the odd thing is, my current modem gives me 11dB attenuation and 21mbit sync, but when I have my dynalink on there I get 5dB attenuation and 24mbit sync (but my rta1320 is stuffed so I dont use it).

My VDSL order is in though, so hopefully I don't get declined for having over 10dB Tongue Out

Be nice to get a new jackpoint for the splitter too, since my current one was just ripped out of another room and is very old lol

The way I read this is different than the way I understood this to work.  If you assume a property already has decent wiring (e.g. CAT5 from the demarcation point, or new buildings with CAT5, etc) then isn't it simply a matter of installing a master splitter and making sure the wiring goes direct to there?

I thought the work was limited to the property (and obviously any changes at the exchange)?

Michael checked mine and Att is over 17 :( His figures also showed my speed at 5mbps, which is really slow - I have had over 14 throughput, so will definitely get my internal wiring checked and filter installed before I go back to faults.

You will probably need a master filter if your attenuation.  Either go via BBHD 0800 225598 or get Coffeebaron/Cyril7 depending on if you live in AKL/WLG.

Those plans and their prices are very appealing. Sadly I live in an area just before the rural broadband zone begins so both fibre and vdsl are but a distant dream. 7Mbps until then, yay.
