Might not be in their job description but shouldnt it be done if there is  uncertainty on part of the wiring?
Not only did I tell him my concerns on it but he also saw it when he was under the house.
He also made a comment about it when he came out from under the house.

Hi, codes, the only codes I normally use are the ones to get into the office or house. I presume you mean they are paid a fixed rate to do the minimum.

Well in the past few months I have be deployed to mop up after Chorus techs have done their worst, if codes are the cause of that then the process needs changing, because VDSL needs a bit of love compared to ADSL and if the techs dont show it then Chorus have a big fail waiting to happen. Well maybe is happening!

Cheers

When i was doing codes it was $65 (roughly) for a splitter install so there was no way you would spend more then an hour installing new cabling etc from demarc to jackpoint all the time - easy situations ya would but most of the time use the existing wiring.

Also the wy you look at it most people dont care or understand about any of it so you would get away with it - but most times if it did come back as low sync speed or failed install you got paid a better rate togo back there and fix it

Knowledge is still an issue though. My boss rings me now and asks how to look at the modem rates.
He taught me what I know about the Network (which is a hell of alot) but now more knowledge is required to do provisioning. Yea the code is still rubbish but it is all swings and roundabouts. 90% of installs will be a win and the rest will be tricky.

So what happened?

Did Chorus come out and redo the install? Considering the job sheets most of the time explicitly say "filter install and WIRING" this mean a NEW line drop and filter install from the demarc down to a point of your choosing. If the tech tells your otherwise you really should ask to see the job sheet.

Not alot so far.
On the phone to them this minute. The was an action order on it but apparently they were going to wait the 10 day period to see if the DLM sorts it out.
I'm arguing that it wont help the attenuation so its pointless waiting.
Currently waiting to talk to level two support.

So apparently Chorus wont touch me till the end of the 10 day period.
I guess that's why they make the first month free, so in cases like this they don't have to give a rebate for failing to provide the service stated.

So after finally getting Chorus to come out and check my lines it turns out it wasn't the line in question.
Unfortunately it was the line from the cabinet to my house.
Pretty annoyed that I had to change telco's and lump the installation costs to find out its a waste of time.

You shouldn't be charged an installation cost, but like all xDSL - it's not guaranteed until it's connected. Telecom on the other hand are a good ISP to deal with and have excellent speeds so even on ADSL you'll get pretty good speeds which will be better now with the inclusion of the master filter. I'm sure they'll sort something out to make you happy.

The tech should be installing Cat5 from the ETP to the jackpoint that is to have the splitter as part of his job description...

At any rate as has been said if it doesn't work you won't be charged for it and with an attenuation near 10dB its very very borderline. Usually Chorus will say no to anything over 10dB immediately.

This quoted statement, with regards to attenuation, is incorrect I would say. My ADSL2+ was at 12dB down (getting 21mbps down and 1mbps up always on every sync) and was I was advised by the chorus tech that it was fine. It's now 14dB down with VDSL. Up is ~30dB (frequency difference of course).  I get a constant 33.9mbps down/9.7 mbps up. Very stable.

*edit* ... unless of course there is a difference between a cabinet vs exchange. Mine is an exchange connection.

If Telecom submits a VDSL request to Chorus with an attenuation high than 10dB they will decline it. I watched one decline at 12.57dB just now so if you have got VDSL on that kind of attenuation you are lucky. Out of interest I'd love to check your address to see what our internal systems say for your attenuation, if you're game flick me a PM.

Edit: Also the speeds you're getting are very similar to mine and I'm on 4dB (using our internal tool)

The actual attenuation value will differ depending on frequency(ies) tested on. ADSL and VDSL use different frequency ranges, thus you will see different reported attenuation stats between the two services on the same line. I don't know which set of frequency(ies) CHorus do their prequal test with.

Pre-qual tests are usually done off the base value from ADSL. So take for example I ran a pre-qual test on my line at home and got around 4-8db on my line. Reason for 10db hardcap on VDSL I believe is because any higher than that and they know it's not worth it and it's going to make other customers experience degrade.

As an FYI.

Here's a reasonably accurate tool for people wanting some stats prior to upgrading, or for interest.
