What location is this specifically? Central Otago is a pretty large area.

Surely you realise 970Kbps (0.97 Mbps) is about 18 times faster than dialup (56 Kbps, 0.056 Mbps)?

Just to be precise...

But without giving location, type of connection, modem stats then people can't give much advice. Also these speeds are over ethernet, not WiFi right?

Ok for all you who are getting on the dialup beat train I mentioned, the speedtest has nothing to do with the speed when the dial up "likeness" occurs.

Dialup like speeds ONLY happen if more than one computer in the house is being used, or your reloading multiple tabs

That speed test above is when somoene else is using the computer E.g would be browsing facebook just loading pages.

Now...we have tried two different routers, so its not an issue of them. Here's the stats...

Please note the margin/attentuation are 0.1dB

Ultimately your problem is going to be fixed by one of 3 solutions -

1) Your cabinet gets upgraded as part of the RBI project. Since we don't know your location it's impossible to know this but all the information is on the Chorus website so you'll be able to check that yourself.

2) You move to RBI wireless

3) You move to a local wireless provider if one exists in your region.

I'm still curious to know the location this is happening in, so at least maybe someone can give the OP any idea if any upgrades/RBI etc are planned for the location they're in.

Hey its Alexandra, but the exchange is in Clyde I believe. There's no plan for rbi here, I think it's because there's already been fibre laid here but it hasn't been connected at the exchange.

I'm pretty sure Alexandra has it's own exchange, unless you're halfway between the two locations and are closer to Clyde (I know the area reasonably well).

Both Clyde and Alexandra are fibre fed ISAMs with VDSL2 available in both towns and a number of VDSL2 RBI cabinets fed from both exchanges. Virtually every town in entire Central Otago region has VDSL2, but as you move further out you start getting a lot of Conklin's and the odd ASAM.

There are another 3 RBI cabinets planned off the CYD exchange due for into service in 2015.

ISAMs are fibre fed and have waaaay more than 16Mbps dimensioned to them.

ASAMs and Conklin's don't do any shaping/throttling.

slow internet is not a bad tradeoff for living in such a nice spot. :-)
