the routing is still bad to some locations i need for gaming and getting some projects done.

going via asia to europe seems strange and this next one is even worse...

now to US East coast via a pretty huge network (Leaseweb)

@l43a2 You need to remember routing is best effort it's not guaranteed to take the most efficient route for ' you '

does Vodafones routing to the US east coast go via many different asian countries? no it doesn't nor does snap or any other ISP I've checked in NZ.

It's not my place to speak to this in detail, but I will say however that Spark values resiliency more than the absolute best latency to all locations and a significant part of what you are seeing is related to that. Other ISPs might value the shortest path instead of a fully resilient service. I HONESTLY don't know what the arrangements for other ISPs look like (and I can't find out, and won't even try)

Routing is not static, I am sure this has been explained to you before

One would assume other providers use multiple upstream providers, which provides the best of both worlds.. resiliency and generally shortest path.

Not sure how you can defend that crap routing with global gateway but whatever.

Routing is not static, I am sure this has been explained to you before

yea i understand that but spark's routing has been pretty good untill the last 2 months which makes me wonder what has been changed cost cutting? who knows.

I think you'll find GGIS has all sorts of agreements with other transit providers for routing traffic....

Considering I am getting far better results with 2degrees (and WXC) and the fact I know @l43a2 personally (and know he does have a very good technical background) different tests have been done between me and him and others and we've all concluded there is something a little strange going on with Sparks routing to multiple international destinations at the moment - not just the examples placed however the examples placed are of the more extreme. I'd honestly recommend somebody at Spark at-least looking over this instead of fobbing it off with "this is how the internet works" etc as to both myself and other people I know this is just getting worse.

For example, 8 hops is quite a bit less than the 24 on Spark. Since Spark are normally very good with routing this will be impacting some other people out there especially with online gaming or latency sensitive work. The latency I am getting is around 150-200ms less than the OP's on an ADSL connection:

People are looking at this particular situation, but I am NOT going to say this is a fault because things like this CAN happen due to situations beyond our reasonable control and sometimes they resolve themselves in time, sometimes they can be longer term issues (cable cuts a long way away from NZ) and sometimes they are normal.

Agreed. He said it is almost back to normal now so something has been done (this has been going on for months with him).

I left one ISP partly because of really poor routing. Vote with your wallet. Sounds like it's coming right though.

thanks to all who've pushed this annoying issue down the line to the right people. the routes are much improved today, and the International speed now has jumped up also, getting amazing international speeds now :P could be unrelated.
