Which leads me to a slightly off topic question... If I can get up to 100/40 on this connection, would there be any compelling reason for me to switch to fibre then with those speeds? I'm actually relatively happy with my current speed atm anyway..

IMO yes, unless you have sufficient need for the extra upload speed. Fibre is cheaper, more consistent (speeds won't vary due to changing line conditions), and has the option of faster plans. It should also have (slightly) lower latency.

Fibre is an obvious choice over any copper product for a single connection.

while VDSL can be fast to the point you will find it hard to consider alternatives, it all comes back to being a copper product.

DLM can bite you, know people who have lost 17a for no explainable reason, 80/40 straight down to 60/10. latency can spike right up, 16 ms each way at the top end on vdsl just to the DSLAM itself!

Interference, Crosstalk and so on can have you waking up one day and have a connection acting totally different.

copper provides an maximum achievable connection rate rather than a burstable maximum rate (This is where fibre gets into the whole CIR vs PIR situation).

fibre is where the future is at. We are already seeing isps start offering 100/50 as their base plan rather than 30/10. This makes it competitive with even the fastest of vdsl lines. Consider things like IPTV (currently vodafone are the only ones AFAIK that offer this) and the many more services that could come into play with fibre.

The biggest advantage to fibre in itself is while copper is already being squeezed to its maximum potential, fibre will be a case of in years to come replacing the bit at each end as the technology becomes more cost effective to enable even faster speeds without looking at congestion.

Its network itself is prominently passive, this takes out the whole situation of cabinets being powered on the side of the road and such. While fibre is a lot more fragile, the the ducting and such it is all delivered in does a very effective job at protecting it.

fibre can be a hassle to get installed, unlike copper it is not already installed everywhere. Processes are being changed to help this along though and as it becomes more common it will get easier to just happen. In the intern, absolutely VDSL is a awesome product but it shouldnt really be your end-goal.

Awesome, thanks guys. Will look to sign up for fibre soon. Property is down a shared driveway, so I'm expecting the whole process to take a while.

In the mean time, I am pretty happy with the speed of VDSL so far (coming from ADSL of 16/1).

Unfortunately I had to restart my modem/router, and it has affected the speed (according to speedtest.net), but nothing noticeable in real world settings.

Give it time, Your in the starting period of DLM. it is alot more agressive at this stage.

Its not uncommon to see a move to the 12dB snr profiles (which will be slower speed) compared to the default 9dB 8b profiles before rolling over to 17a.

As you have already noted, the volatile nature of VDSL is why fibre is ultimately the best move.

In your case, ild assume your VDSL installation involved a master filter installation? your ADSL speed seems a little low for where it should have been in this first place. - Null issue, but sudden Realization none the less.

Best of luck with your fibre installation, in your case absolutely VDSL first, then work towards fibre. It will take some time to deal the shared driveway. luckily that process is easier than it was at first now-days.

Excellent news.. just got bumped up to 17a by the looks and getting around 90/35. Gotta be happy with that!

No masterfilter was installed with this connection (so I assume that there's one already??), the previously quoted ADSL speeds were from my previous place we rented..

I though speeds quoted were the same location so that makes a lot of sense.

Great to hear my prediction and assumption that it was doing the 17a move was on point! 90/35 is within the ballpark of where i predicted.

maybe, maybe not.

do you have a single jack point which is the only one in the house that works for broadband? It's likely marked 'VDSL' or 'Broadband'.

If multiple jack points work for VDSL, then you don't have a master filter.

Oh. i did miss the point on the master filter.

Bigpipe dont do a full VDSL installation, so master filter does not come with it.

in your case, a master filter might give you an extra 10mbit if your lucky but you are getting close to that line already. What a master filter could do for you is help reliability, error rates or anything else behind the scenes.

As above, simple way to tell if a master filter is installed.
