Hi all,

So my connection date was today, I set up my Netcomm NF8AC modem as per instructions [url=http://pages.bigpipe.co.nz/netcomm-ac1600-nf8ac-modem-router-setup-guide-vdsl/]here[/url] While i get a solid DSL light, I do not seem to get an internet or wan light at all. It doesn't even blink.

I initially requested ADSL, but then decided to change to VDSL and was told that it was all good.

Looking at my router stats here (hope this works) -

It seems I might be on ASDL??

I've been in contact with bigpipe support, and they have mentioned that they are happy to send a tech in, but would like to cover all bases before i head down that route.

Am I missing something?

Yeah that's ADSL, try using the ADSL instructions.

Thanks guys, I've tried setting up the modem for ADSL (just off the basic setup as I couldn't see a setup guide from bigpipe) but no luck. I did notice the internet light start flashing as if it was trying to connect... I've also tried an old Slingshot Dynalink modem that i've used on bigpipe ADSL before and it still wouldn't work.

So is this something that bigpipe can change on their end to hook me up onto ADSL first and sort out VDSL later? Would like to avoid a run around with having a tech come around.

Would like to have some sort of internet connection sooner rather than later.

have you emailed their support about this?

they should be able to sort this pretty quickly

I just emailed them this morning about being set up on ADSL instead of VDSL (I wasn't sure before, wanted to check with you guys first). Hopefully you're right and it can get sorted pretty quickly!

Followed up! The short version is that when Chorus did the connection you were connected to the wrong port at the cabinet. A fault's been logged for a tech to resolve it. Our support process should have you sorted, but if anything comes up let us know - and feel free to leave a post once everything's resolved so we see it :)

Thanks Josh, yes bigpipe support have got a tech coming out tomorrow afternoon!

Funnily enough, I got my connection confirmation email from bigpipe... It said that it could not see an active connection from my line...

Yup - that'll be because the ADSL connection that you've tried to use is probably not us. (It may actually be another ISP! Don't worry about this, btw, it's up to them to turn this off.) We'll be able to see that your VDSL line isn't active, which is why the connection email says that.

Bottom line is that the tech visit should sort everything out, and you'll be up and running on Bigpipe VDSL before long :)

that looks to be an 8b connection, based off your distance you should hit 17a at some point.

Likely would be hitting close on the 100/40 mark there considering the broadcom linecard your clearly on!

keep your fingers crossed now! no telling when/if DLM will actually be so kind to you. Avoid connection reboots/drops so as to not upset DLM.

I have no idea what that all means (not that technically inclined with these things), but 100/40 sounds awesome!

Quick rundown for you. - Okay not as Quick as jace but detailed and fast!

VDSL has two sets of "profiles" as such.

the first being your standard DLM profiles, this sets things relating to your connection be it your interleaving (latency) noise margins and other technical figures which affect your "speed"

the second is bandplans, this is essentially how much bandwith is Available for your VDSL connection

This image shows you the difference between the bandplans and what the bands are that make up that bandplan (sidenote, the above image is 997 not 998 so it will differ ever so slightly)

The higher bandplans are saved for shorter connections as they can make use of the extra signal available. Sadly since this is a analogue signal there is loss over distance. This is much like how VDSL itself can only be used up to so far, After that its better to use less specturm and adjust power levels a little to boost speeds.

DLM (Dynamic line management) runs active on your line all the time, there is no way to turn it off. It can not be told to do any certain thing, Some days it even has a mind of its own. Quite a beast...

While you dont need to know how it works it helps to know the basics simply being, DLM will try to provide you with what it sees is the best Connection it can. It will make adjustments depending on if your say, Getting a lot of disconnections or errors on your line to give you a more stable connection at the cost of speed for example.

The unfortunate thing is, DLM can not really tell the difference between a Reboot or a Loss of connection. This is why the best advice you can take is simply to avoid unnecessary disconnections.

100/40 is ofcourse just an approximate guess based off your current stats and an assumption you are on 8b (which the upload being stuck at a max on 10~11 would imply.) Your modem stats would tell you exactly what goes on.

the luck of being on a broadcom line card means your connection can hit a maximum of 100/50 the ikanos linecards sadly only go to 70/30 Max. It is rare to hit the absolute maximum on a broadcom as they are really pushing what is available. But on 8b normally realstic the expectation is a max of about 50/10 so your already winning there!

In your first week, DLM will be more aggressive, and quickly make changes. After that it plays the long game a lot more and you hardly notice its there unless something goes really wrong.

If you wanna read up further on it, Ild recommend the VDSL tuning thread It is Rather long, Prominently based on information from 997 rather than the 998 profiles now in operation however the technical understanding to it is the same, Simply bits are in different locations in the bandplan.
