A local working locally!  (One tank of petrol every three weeks, and that's mainly to ensure 'junior' gets to school etc...)  I like what our english lass said.  'You can get through, just not to the person you wanted to get through to, unfortunately.'

New friends, anyone?CoolKissInnocent

It is certainly a interesting way to meet people.... Perhaps it could be a new Telecom service, kind of like internet dating except over the phone....!

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Hi all

Someone else also has my number and here at my house I didn't get anyones so I'm still phoneless.

The person who has my number was making toll calls on it yesterday so I've had slingshot toll bar it.  Might be a good idea to get that done for your own numbers as well. :)

I'm in Sydney and can't ring my wife in Puke' because they are STILL disconnected even though our neighbours phone is working! She has rung them via cellphone six times and say it may not be fixed till TUESDAY! Getting free rental next month and $20 off internet bill as compensation. What my fellow Puke' people getting in the way of compensation?

Well my ex's wife called Telecom and they said they'd put $20 on my account to offset mobile calls.  They couldn't put it straing on my mobile because I'm not with them.  They still haven't put it on my landline account, though.

They are refusing to put toll bars on the numbers of people that know that other people have their numbers with the excuse "what are the chances they'll run up your toll bill?"

I'm with Slingshot so they've cut access to my number for the person that has it.

I'm not 100% certain but I dont think telecom will be running the billing files for the affected number range because there are so many incorrect number assignments at the moment.

Yeah but where does the liability lie for the calls made thru third party telcos like the slingshot given in the example. I would say it lies with telecom but I dont know what their interconnect agreement with the other telcos says for situations where they mis identify the calling party in this manner.

You cant expect other companies to write off calls in these cases.

So when do you think we will see the real story behind this outage?

Thats something that will be within your providers contract or agreement with Telecom.

The real story? You mean that there was an outage and that they are repairing it as fast as they can? Or the lack of the 'omg its teh bubble'  articles?

Well for something to fail on this magnitude for this long it has to be pretty major. I was under the impression they had ample spares for the neax's that had being taken from decomissioned exchanges, but whoever told me that may have being misinformed.

Perhaps they have had to get someone out of retirement to wind a new spring for the aged winding mechanism for the clockwork exchange?

As you said, it was a major outage and even if they had spares - its not a simple case of just throwing them in and hoping that they work.

I think that the issue is that the last backup for phone line records they had was from 2005, so all phone number transfers that have taken place since then are not in the system. I am amazed the media hasn't picked up on it.

True. If the rumour is true then wouldn't they be expected to get blasted in the press.... I don't work for Telecom, that is the rumour flying around most of Pukekohe at the moment.

So lets get this right, there is a few chaps currently wading through the phone book trying to match phone numbers/addresses with street address records for MDF pairs
