From the RNZ website:

Around 10,000 phone lines have been rendered useless due to a complex software fault at Telecom's Pukekohe exchange.

Telecom says it's not known how long it will take to fix them. The fault occurred on Thursday.

A complex software fault at the exchange means any calls, including 111 emergency calls, cannot be made until the problem's fixed.

Telecom says broadband is unaffected, and it has bolstered support for mobile phones to carry some of the load that would normally be carried by landlines.

Or perhaps it is because you are in Norway?

Apparently the IP address you are coming through belongs to Norway. You have the Norwegian flag.

So if you're on Xnet Fusion, you'll be one of very few Pukekohe's that does have a working phone :)

True Johnr, that's the thing with all the new emerging alternatives, it's not really the end of the world for most people if their land-line goes down (although we will of course jump up and down as if it was).

We are wireless with VFX and the phone is still going.... Great to be the other way around for once. The wife is still wild as she can't ring any of her friends...

I have a pile of black crankhandles if they get desperate. I'm very curious to know what actually happened!

"we tripped over the plug" sounds almost too convincing.

Well, it seems like I spoke too soon about our VFX line being unaffected. It seems as though all the call routing in Pukekohe is completely screwed up. Our VFX number rings to another number in Pukekohe. So, even though we have VFX number it must still go through the exchange at some point. Arggh!

Edit: It seems to be a fault with calls originating from the Pukekohe exchange.
