mortiis33: doozy, the speeds from Rapidshare do not CHANGE between off and on peak - they are the same during both, meaning that Telecom obviously don't change it from being filtered (or whatever they're doing to it).

I've explained how it works, its not going to change. You need to either accept it, or change plans.

If you are changing ISP you'll certainly want to check what ISP's are also traffic shaping Rapidshare content as there are others out there actively doing this.

Telecom don't shape Rapidshare traffic on any of their other plans, only BigTime which is clearly sold as a traffic shaped plan.

Personally I don't use use Rapidshare but it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to keep the limit on one type of filesharing after 2am but not on another type.

Doozy, are you able to elaborate on the rationale behind why Rapidshare needs to remain capped after 2am when bit torrent doesn't for example?

That's a very reasonable question to ask. The number of p2p users must outnumber RS/MU significantly, in which case, perhaps the traffic shaping should be proportional to amount of bandwidth each of these protocol consumes?

I would wager they both use a truck load of data overnight but isn't that the whole point. shape the heck out of filesharing in peak time so people schedule it for off peak.

Anyway I recently came across this UK ISP's explaination of their traffic mangement/shared broadband:

I think it's the best straight-forward, sensible and open explanation I've seen out of any ISP.

Something for Telecom to work towards for Big Time, it would certainly cut down of the amount of people hating the plan/unrealistic expectations and more consistent traffic management rules would be nice.

doozy: to clarify, p2p/rapidshare/mega upload, heavily managed during 9am-2am, p2p has no restriction outside those hours, RS and MU aren't completely released, there is still a restriction, just not as heavy.

Out of interest since we are talking about Telecom and P2P, are Telecom looking at ever getting P2P caching servers such as PearApp or is it grapevine or similar.

Also whats your on net/off net P2P traffic ratios? I imagine with such a large amount of users a lot of P2P would stay local?

well. whoever told you that is wrong, rapidshare is managed 24/7.

I've had assistance from advanced technical support on another of occasions and they're pretty on to it guys. If this is what they said to mortis33, then they are themselves confirming that Telecom is not really keeping Big Time's theme.

Is all p2p traffic managed 24/7? Or is it just rapidshare? What is the level of shaping for p2p between 2am and 9am? I can understand that shaping is at a decent level between 9am and 2am, but wouldnt it be fairly minimised between 2am and 9am?

I can get 1GB of data from rapidshare over a few hours during the week (peak time), that's not bad really considering I used to get just on 1GB from rapidshare overnight with Slingshot. Slingshot cost me more, I had to pay for extra traffic most months, and the afterhours free off peak was shaped within an inch of it's life so you wouldn't get anything downloaded anyway.

Now I don't have to schedule anything for after hours and the speeds during peak time are a lot better than I used to get. I haven't had to schedule anything. My wife does complain that facebook and websites are slow....but when I have downloads running....I am not surprised.

I'm now doing this as well.
I used to schedule all downloads to start at 2AM, but whats the point when they just go as fast between 9AM-2AM.
I also agree with the OP since there was no mention of any traffic being shaped 24/7 - I am quite happy with this plan as at the end of the day Unlimited data is unlimited data, but I would expect a premium member service for Rapidshare would take priority over p2p?

It is not possible to to time of day shaping for this traffic type.

I would have to disagree about the ambiguity, the traffic management description above is written in fairly basic english which clearly explains that there is traffic shaping, this not a plan for everyone and they will shape traffic generally on peak but generally whenever they want.

Other users in this thread are reporting that even after traffic shaping they are getting BETTER speeds then their old ISP's, myself included, on this unlimited traffic managed plan than with other ISP's they are paying per GB for.

I don't think anyone can successfully win a case against Telecom about this.

I had to laugh when I saw this thread on the home page still going on. :)

Now if you want to see a managed traffic plan done badly with a successful lawsuit, just look at Big Time v1 (Go Large.)
