Is anyone from Telecom willing to give any technical explanation on what has caused this fault? I just can't understand how an outage at a single location, even a major one, can cause total network loss for the entire South Island and the South of the North Island?

Why is there no redundancy? I just can't imagine how anyone got away with designing a system that in the event of a single point of outage has the potential bring down the entire network with the potential to disrupt over a million people.

One can only presume it's an RNC failure. This is the resourse that controls all the cellsites (node B's) within a network.

While a network has mutliple RNC's there are no "backups" as such.

Interesting that every time I read about a XT outage the official word is "down south of Taupo".

What makes their network above Taupo more resilient?

That's fine, but why isn't there a backup? Surely if the Taupo site is responsible for controlling everything South of it in the country then the logical thing to do would be to have redundancy at this location.

This is not a single element (server) failure. A failure earlier this morning had a cascade effect on a number of elements which resulted in the major issue we have now.

Luckily this did not affect customer service for the northern part of our network.

This was not a "single point of failure" issue.

FYI, the XT network is divided into two based on number of cell sites and number of customers.
