Out of telecom 6000 employees 1697 of them are on over 100,000 a year. Not many companies have almost a third of their staff on that kind of sallery. Plus they currently have 600 million worth of office and datacener buildings. Not to mension the 9 billion dollar network (thats everything mobile internet and PSTN)

I doubt that they will let everyone use external VOIP providers over their network. Yes local calling is going down. Thats why line rental went UP $2.65 as of today.

“The overall cost of telecommunications is continuing to come down. National toll call prices are now 15% lower than they were three years ago, and international calling is 30% cheaper,” Ms Crone said

The residential line rental increase is the first increase in two years and reflects steadily rising prices over that time.

“As anyone who has been to the supermarket or paid a power bill lately knows, prices have been creeping up and that affects us as well as the rest of New Zealand.”

The standard monthly HomeLine rental will increase from $39.85 to $42.20, except in the Wellington 04 calling region and Christchurch city and most suburbs where the price will rise from $32.85 to $34.80 per month. The increases will apply to Secondline and HomeLine Economy"

Nz_Dude: Hey all,

Telecom are investing on average 1 million a day building this new network yet it hasnt been discussed here !

Why not talk about what we want and expect from this new amazing network, I have personally used it and its very cool. The video calling is super clear and your home internet connection is around about 25mbs i think dont hold me to that one....

Im personally looking forward to the fast internet and movies/programs on demand.... Sort of like mysky from what ive seen but a nice UI.

So share your thoughts on NZ's future 1.4 billion dollar network as most of us will be using it very very soon :P

Telecom are not spending $1,000,000 a day building their NGN. They are spending 1.4 over seven years, which is considerably less than $1,000,000 per day.

According to what I have read they announced their NGN would be built in August 2005 & "Fully Implemented" by 2012. Some parts of the country will have the service in 2007, but I am not sure of what parts.

It is certainly good news that this is happening, however considering that iiNet in Australia are "currently offering" ADSL2 with 24Mbit download & 1 Mbit upload, then New Zealand is already considerably behind the times, if the speed is to be only 25Mbit in 2012 for most people in New Zealand.

Finally, how did you manage to get the opportunity to use the NGN? Are you part of the trial with Telecom's NGN?

Hmmm.. I think Telecom need to find a PR person who can actually read what they have just written before they publish it. Trying to tell people that prices are falling therefore we have to put them up does not go down well with people! Power is a perfect example of a monoploy as well so it's great to see the irony of her comments!

In regards to her comments about supermarket prices how the hell does supermarket prices affect Telecom?? Slightly off topic but I could show you 1000 items that are the same price or cheaper than they were 10 years ago..

Exactly, Telecom have yet again released misleading information. They have a very poor track record of doing this.

There is also a very cool complete distribution called Asterisk@Home which even comes as an ISO www.asteriskathome.org this will take you about an hour to have a fully working PBX at home. Minimum h/w specs are basically a PII 500 with 256MB, you can get away with a 350 or 400 but a 500 is good.

Once you've installed it you can either get a hardware SIP phone or use acopy of X-Ten softphone which can run on your PC. If you've got an questions send me a PM.

True, but he isn't correct either.

By the way, do you work for Telecom NZ? I curious as to what the actual download speed for "Residential Customers" "might" be on Telecom's NGN? Are you able to provide an approximate range of figures for both upload & download?

Thx. will have a look into that one. It's on my long term list of 'things to do'. Ideally once I get my own place I'll just deck it out with 100/1000mbit network and use VOIP internally to an asterisk box, then pstn or voip from there depending on where the calls going.

As I was reading that press release I agree with you. She said its getting cheaper so were putting the price up. Probably one of the more stupid things to say to the public. As to me knowing about NGN I attended the NGN road show plus I have a friend who is on the NGN trial. Its very very cool.

Lets remember we don’t have the population of Australia. I think its great that we are finally going to be getting a triple play network. Dont trash a service which hasnt been launched yet as I know you will all love it when it comes out :)

That's old news. Apparently Telecom have to put their prices up because supermarkets and power companies have..oh, and also because the cost of toll calls has dropped so now they need to get that money back that the customers would have saved.

I'm not trashing the service before it comes out. TelstraClear already have a Triple Play Network now. Also TelstraClear currently offer 10Mbit down & 2Mbit up Cable Plans to peeple in parts of Wellington/Kaipati Coast & Christchurch. New Zealand's population hasn't restricted them offering that speed now has it?

Telecom last year made a $916,000,000 Net Profit, so in terms of New Zealand's population, it seems there is ample room for companies to make plenty of $$. Using New Zealand's population as an excuse is really a non-issue IMHO, the main reason we don't have sufficient choice in New Zealand is because we have not Unbundled the Local Loop. This has resulted in the pathetic 128KB/s upload speeds that we are restricted to by Telecom & the high costs, not to mention poor bandwidth allocation.

Finally, with your friend who is in the NGN trial, what download/upload speed is he/she being offered? Is the NGN service still reliant on distance from the exchange in order to enable maximum download speed? Or is it similar to ADSL, where the further you are away from the exchange, the greater the degradation in speed? Will it actually be cheaper than what we currently pay for the end user?
