I think you're mixing up the two different 2500 text packages.

The one that you seem to be on is how I described above; 20c per text until you hit the $12 cap.

The other one, currently promoted on Telecom's site, takes the $12 up front and gives you 2500 "free" texts in return.

On the online portal it states:
Text Anyone 2500

So can anyone show me categorically where on the Telecom website it outlines any of these conditions (eg 20c / TXT to use up the credit before you get the 2500 TXT's etc) and how the billing works?

i can verify that the first 60 messages dont have to be on network.just tried it on an old prepay sim,
however if this is an issue you could always go onto "your telecom" and purchase the 2500 txt addon which takes the $12 as one lump sum

this is where a signature goes

the problem you are going to run into is that telecom have recently changed their billing system, it used to be an incrememtal 20c per message untill cap is reached (ie 60 messages for $12 txting) but now the extras on the "your telecom" link take the credit in one lump sum

The OP is confused (and understandably so).

there are basically 2 different txt anyone packages out there.

The new one, which just removes $12 from your balance immediately then you get 2500 ‘free’ txts.

Much simpler IMO.

The old one, which you cannot buy now unless you always had it, does not ding you for anything up front. Instead it charges you 20c/txt for the first 60 txts (to any Nz mob) for a total of $12, then you get the next 2440 free. This is a lot more confusing, but Telecom allowed people tro stay on it because it is actually a little better (if, for example, you only used 10 txts it works out much cheaper)

The issue the OP had, I think, is that his daughter is on the old package and had only sent 58 of the required 60 txts before she ran out of credit so could not send the remaining 2 txts in order to get the next 2440 free. Since 58 txts would cost $11.60 to send , and she started on >$12 then presumably she used some of her credit on something else, like an international txt, call, data etc. which would make her balance too low to send the remaining 2 txts. No dodgy dealings or shenanigans.

I prefer the old one myself as my usage is really really variable.

Not disclosing that it is different to what is offered now is just causing confusion(tm) which is bad marketing ;)

Hi team,

Just to clarify. There are two ways to charge for this service. This is because we're in the process of migrating customers to the new way of charging.

Old Billing way:

We will charge 20c per text messages until you get to 60 texts. Between 61 - 2500 these will be zero rated. So in essence you've paid $12. However this does not stop you from making calls, data or other usage charges using up your $12 before reaching the 60 texts.

New Billing way:

We will now take $12 out of your account straight away and you will have access to your 2500 texts.
