I've just tried it on an external ADSL line that goes via the cache farm and it seems to be working fine.

Any particular vimeo URL that's not working? If you could post that it would help.

So I suspect it could be an issue with either your home broadband or something similar. Ring up the Broadband helpdesk on 0800 225 598 and they will look into it.

Edit: Something does seem to be wrong with how player.vimeo.com is responding. So I am going to ask a few people internally what is going on. But if you could please log a call that would be great.

I've already been through the broadband help desk, the tech tried it from his workstation, said "works for me" and basically refused to help any further.

The wrapper page and the video player load (along with the video poster frame), but when I click "play" the video doesn't stream.

If I proxy my connection through our corporate proxy server (switchnap, USA) it loads fine.

I'm on a static IP if that makes any difference.

This is a tcpdump of the HTTP request made when the "play" button is clicked (for privacy reasons I have removed the Cookie header):

If you could ring back and say that you would like to log a case as it is an issue. Quote this geekzone thread if you don't have any joy. I am going to speak with the Complex Technical Support folks about this as it is an issue. I think it is one of the upstream content providers as it doesn't work either directly or via the proxy cache farm on broadband or over XT.

EDIT: If you can PM me the case number I will escalate it to the correct person. :)

Yes... I just use the auto-assigned DNS servers. They correspond to UBA Primary/Seconday.

Perhaps if you're running in HTML5 mode, but with the Flash plugin, that's not what I saw from my packet capture. The Flash plugin made a request to player.vimeo.com with HTTP GET /play_redirect and then attempts to open a connection to 69.4.231.52:80 which appears to be some kind of cache (reverse DNS is jangle.cacetech.com, which is a site run by http://www.riverbed.com/, a vendor of web optimisation technologies).

My conclusion is that Telecom is using a dodgy optimisation product from these guys, and its breaking all sorts of ways. Also, the fact that it's been reported over several weeks, both by logging faults with the helpdesk and via TCNZ reps here escalating it, points to some incompetence here... the required workaround is turn off the effing caching while you sort out why it doesn't work. First rule of optimisation... don't break something that works in an attempt to get it to work better.

You're right the issue has been traced to the Akamai cache farm. Unfortunately they aren't servers that Telecom support or have any control over. This case was escalated to Akamai this morning but I haven't seen any ETR about when it's going to be fixed.

However I just checked Vimeo now on my home broadband connection as I wasn't working today and it seems to be working fine.

Could you please re-test it and see if it's working for you or not?

It's still not working, neither via Flash nor HTML5 mode.

My current workaround is to use proxy server located in the US.

Just watched that awesome timelapse Christchurch video.. So heartbreaking. I'm still not officially working today but will chase up with the Level 3 guy who was dealing with to get a status update.

So some new info to add which leads me to believe that actually this is a Vimeo misconfiguration. Firstly, I tried switching to the "new" Vimeo player, and lo and behold, it plays OK, with the content stream being an .mp4 video served up by an Akamai server, 219.88.187.32.

If I switch back to the Flash player, again it doesn't work. Now a bit more of an indepth crack at it with Wireshark shows this sequence when the "Play" button is pushed on the Flash player.

from my IP > player.vimeo.com (HTTP) "GET /play_redirect?clip_id=12199910&sig=bf1ebdb5c8c470626be86edbed3bc9cd&time=1329858352&quality=hd&codecs=H264,VP8,VP6&type=moogaloop_local&embed_location= HTTP/1.1 "

from player.vimeo.com back comes an HTTP response with this content:

Looks to me like vimeo isn't accepting connections from its own Flash player, at least for my IP.
