Well I thought I would join the masses in signing up for VDSL. However I go the following email.

"There will be a delay in connecting your VDSL as you are currently connected to an older type of broadband network which is not compatible with VDSL."

So now I will have to wait 2 weeks. Might need to call Telecom though, as I will be out of the country by the time they want to install it.

From what I understand??? the map shows me as being VDSL compatible, but a previous post in this thread states the cabinet will need an upgrade first.

If not infrastructure but you are on the older broadband network (of which there isn't any real difference to end users). The difference is around an equivalence of inputs to Chorus vs the way we use to do things under UBS/FIPD as mentioned in a different post.

Chances are you're connected on UBS broadband (Simon has given a stellar explanation earlier in this thread) essentially you're on a version of broadband that was sold pre-Chorus. We need to change you onto the newer UBA broadband before we can connect you to VDSL.

Just call 123 and book a date after your back or pm me and I'll check into it for you.

I'm renting and underneath the house is locked up. Is it likely that technician will need access to underneath the house to install splitter? Logistics of getting key from owner that particular day will be tricky.

Very excited to get VDSL.

Hi, can he not leave the key for a few days in advance. Its possible he may be able to create a clean pair without getting under the house, but often if you dont inspect the wiring on older houses you miss unexpected stuff.

I can't agree with that. Someone here on GZ got it installed at around 18 dB recently (naturally I can't find the post now) and while the download speeds were only about 10 Mb/s, the upload speed was in the megabits. That's a huge improvement if you need to do a lot of uploads!

Hi, connecting an over length tail screws performance for all under length tail users in the bundle, so its not wise to connect over length tails.

See my previous post on page 17 - you will have a UBS connection which needs to be switched over to UBA so that VDSL can be provisioned, and that process can take up to 2 weeks to complete.

It's a bit iffy when it goes over 10.8dB - I've had VDSL installed myself on 16dB on the street (early days of VDSL) and got ADSL2 speeds on my line, so was worth changing back. Remember, it's taken from the street so might have been 18dB inside their house but under 10.8dB on the street.

Why is that? I had always imagined that that each DSL line is connected to it's own individual DSL 'switch' port in the exchange or cabinet and from that point onward it's just ones and zeroes with the only bottleneck being the back haul from the cabinet back into the network.

Because the DSLAM and modem have to increase power to deal with the higher line loss this increases the crosstalk to other pairs in the bundle and reduces their noise margin, so they suffer. Managing the power density profiles of all services in the bundle is a big issue in ensuring everyone gets optimum performance, thats what ALU's DLM system is for.

With ADSL2+ only using 2MHz of spectrum the problem is less of an issue (but still an issue), as the spectrum usage increases to 18MHz (or even 30MHz for some profiles) in VDSL2 then the crosstalk issues become many orders greater, hence power density management becomes more critical.

Got my TG589v2 modem this morning. Install is next Tuesday.

I have set it to bridge mode but in the process it asked me whether I wanted DCHP v4 enabled. I did not tick the option. Was this the right thing to do?

Do I need to do anything else to the modem in preparation for the install? Or on the Router side? I am using a 4 week old Draytek Vigor modem so my router is already configured to PPPoE in it's config.

Also bridging seems to be the only option if you are running a GigaBit network, as it appears the TG589v2 only has 100MBit LAN ports.

And on a kind of related note, is the attenuation as shown on my router stats the "total' (ie internal + external factors combined) or external only? Apologies for the non-tech speak.
