Or if you're using iMessage or RCS (via chat features on Google or Samsung messages) and the recipient is also using it, then it goes via data... So many ifs & buts..

That's quick for Samsung, it used to take months. It's a good upgrade, my S22+ feels faster AND has better battery life.

Going by the fact I couldn't send an SMS when in airplane mode, I'd say probably not. Could be wrong

@old3eyes no so the SMS are delivered over the mobile network

SparkNZ made it clear March / April 2023

To deliver a SMS to a handset does not require much coverage at all

Yep looks like you're correct.  No SMS when in airplane made in Spark.  OK on 2D.

I'm interested to learn more - can you elaborate on the "SparkNZ made it clear" statement?

WiFi Calling is helpful for people who live in bad or zero coverage areas... So if you have ZERO coverage, there will be no SMS. One use case for this (and there are many) is that banks and other services use SMS as 2-factor verification, so I'm interested as to why SparkNZ decided not to implement SMS over WiFi.

Because it would have then further delayed the launch for VoWifi. Saying that, irrespective, Spark’s been so late to the party, pretty sure Telstra had VoWifi back in 2016

thelonepinetree: so I'm interested as to why SparkNZ decided not to implement SMS over WiFi.

Only because Spark cannot provide sms over wifi yet, obscure technical reasons, no other reasons. It's temporary Spark will have it eventually, if it's not overtaken by something else before then ; )

Edit: If you really need that now, you must choose another provider.

Re Spark wifi calling, I will in the near future be spending 3 weeks in Taiwan. The Spark website makes the following statement:

  •

    • Spark WiFi Calling is currently only available for voice and video calling within New Zealand.
    • You can make local calls within NZ
    • You can make calls from NZ to overseas

However if you're currently located overseas or if you're using a VPN Service in NZ, you may not be able to use Spark WiFi Calling.

So first it says it will not work, then 3 lines down it says it may not work. Which is it?

Also, if it does work while I am over there, is the charging any different?

It all seems to work well for me.  One very useful feature on the S22+ (not sure about other phones) is that it will use the 2nd SIM if that has 4G or 5G and there is no Wifi connection.  I have only seen this when the primary SIM drops back to 3G, not sure whether it will work when there is no coverage.

Anyone having this issue VoWiFi on Spark??  My wife and I both have Samsung A52s  phones  hers is on Spark and intermittently  her phone doesn't ring and she gets a missed call SMS .  I've reproduced this my self by calling her  and her phone doesn't ring until the cover is opened.   My mother  in law and my self with the same phones are on Skinny with VoWiFi set and don't have the same issue.  I've set her phone to  Cellular   preference over VoWiFi calling and that seems to have solved this problem

We have patchy 4G coverage at home and I too have the odd missed call.  But VoWiFi is set to mobile network preferred, so that can't be the cause of my problem.
