surfisup1000: I just went through the rigorous helpdesk procedure , firstly with telecom, then apple, then back to telecom and finally got through to someone who knows what is happening.

Telecom are aware of the issue and they have network people investigating. They think it might be related to ported numbers and the device is not communicating to the apple server.

And, hopefully the issue is fixed sooner rather than later (in their words) . .. they will send me an sms with details at a later time.

Great to hear you got a good response with some good information. Let us know if you get more information from TNZ.

iMessage/Facetime activates via an Activation SMS.
It's a 2 way handshake where a request SMS is sent to the iMessage servers, and an activation response sent back to the device.

Part of the carrier bundle determines where the SMS is sent to and should include an entry similar to this:
<key>PhoneNumberRegistrationGatewayAddress</key>
<string>+447786205094</string>

Since its getting to the 'Awaiting activation' instead of hitting an error straight away, that would indicate the request has been sent, but no response has been sent back to the device.

It would be interesting to see what else is being sent to the gateway, to see what verification is done on Apples side. It could be an authorisation issue on their end specific to the IMSI where its expecting one carrier but receives another, or if its authorising fine, but the message is not being routed back to the ported number for some reason.

OK, I just had a call from telecom, and, my phone is now activating on imessage just fine.

So is my partners (which wasn't before), so maybe it is fixed for everyone.

The Telecom engineer said they think the problem is with apples systems and it is not related to ported numbers.

Interesting though that apple only went so far to say it was an issue with telecom. I guess it may just be easier to track from telecoms side.

He was going to give me another call to give the final reason -- sounds like they are still not 100% sure.

Hi we've looked into the SMS routing. Please try reactivating your iMessage if not already working.

Fantastic - sincere thanks for the quick investigation and response, Telecom.  Now works for me too.

Yes, great response and help from Telecom... Shows the value of GZ to get to the source of a problem.
