That's correct, regarding the throttling/shaping. I mean't more along the lines of how does the ASAM exactly handle when all multiple people are connected? Does it just spread out the bandwidth evenly?

farcus: slow internet is not a bad tradeoff for living in such a nice spot. :-)

Just down at my folks for Christmas, personally I wouldn't live here as the internet is terrible haha.

I'm back in VDSL land now haha, I'm not certain what they want to do. I presume they'll wait for access to the fibre that's outside as they were told they could get it eventually.

No they won't.

Chorus do allow some access to rural fibre now in areas where the network has been built to allow this. They will even go as far as letting you dig your own trench to cut down on install costs which could bring the install cost down to possibly only a few $k in a perfect situation.

The Chorus website lists the areas this is available but where they live isn't one of them, so no, they won't ever be getting fibre.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the total number of ATM based devices (ASAMs and Conklin's) still exceeds 1000. Some of these are still to be replaced as part of the RBI, but hundreds will still remain after and there have never been any plans to replace all of these in part because many can't easily be replaced as replacing the E1 backhauls with fibre isn't cost effective.

I think I saw a map once of exchanges, Conklins, ASAMs etc that showed what was being upgraded and what wasn't - is that the same one you're referring to? I have a relative in a rural area too, and while they can get good ADSL1 I'd like to see if there's anything in the pipeline for them.
