Oh noes! A computer-related thing that we don't fully understand, must be a virus!

Lazy journalism, love it.

Athlonite: I can't see why Telecom haven't yet dumped Yahoo as their email provider

It's very complicated (tm)

For some reason I feel a tui ad would be good right about now... something along the lines of

Telecom NZ Email "It's complicated".... YEAH RIGHT

It can't be that hard otherwise other ISP's would be doing exactly what you are doing ie: farming it out to incompetent Yahoo

Surely 1 million plus paying customers should be entitled to expect NZ's dominant ISP to provide a competent email system?

If your unable to the job right then maybe you shouldn't be doing it at all then Telecom NZ customers are paying for service not shareholder profits, so stop sounding like your being butt hurt if telecom don't want to loose customers over this then put up or GTFO of supplying email services simple as that...
As I said other ISP's manage to do it without much problem to the customer surely Telecom NZ have the staff who are capable to do this

Vodafone NZ must have nearly that, and theirs appears to be done in house, and apart from their IPs getting backlist occasionally on RBLs, you don't hear too many problems about it.

First of all there is no need to start making personal attacks. I would remind you that all the Telecom staff are here in our own time to try be helpful. If you didnt mean it to be a personal attack I suggest reconsidering your wording.

Secondly it has nothing to do with whether or not Telecom staff are capable as we out source this system to Yahoo! as a result of the system growing beyond the point that Telecom could maintain it. Compounding this point these attacks often aren't effecting only Xtra but also other Yahoo users. To get angry at Yahoo! or Xtra is fine but I find it a little rich that we all overlook the fact there are some dickheads decided to break into a load of email accounts steal address books and either A) Use them for spam or B) Sell them to spammers. People are far to quick to dismiss the actions of people like this in favour of burning the companies with a face.

Finally Xtra! services a huge number or email users which is unlikely to compare to anything another ISP has to manage bar maybe Vodafone.

I'm not justifying the downtime's, we're just as frustrated as everyone else is. Trust me, so lets try to be civil here and work to resolve the issue.

Cheers Yyrael.. it teaches me for checking geekzone while on holiday... should just put it down and do my normal day job and not bother assisting geekzoners at all when I get back to work.

I think the other thing forgotten is that Telecom have a helpdesk so you have someone to complain to. Whereas who do you ring when you have an issue with your free gmail/yahoo/outlook/any other free email provider.

As I said before... its very complicated.. and the technical aspects of either hosting it in-house or moving to another provider is the least of our worries.

Looks like there has been another batch today, as have just received 6 in the last dew hours, yet none yesterday. I think people would be more sympathetic if their was more information from telecom on their status page about the problem and steps being taken. I don't think we really know what caused it the last two times.
