quickymart: VDSL install tomorrow :)

For the record, here's my line stats from my router:

Telecom's speedtest reports 16MB/s download, 0.99MB/s upload, latency 9ms.

Post master filter install you should be looking good.

With a 3.5db attenuation is should be fine and with the variance between actual and attainable rates shows a master filter will be required.

Installation completed successfully!

But.

I can't make my Netcomm router authenticate and connect to the internet. It gets a DSL signal, but when I enter my username <login>.xadsl@xtra.co.nz with the password (reset by the BB helpdesk) it just keeps reloading the basic setup page. Are there some specific settings I should be using? PPPoA or PPPoE? For people who have got these connected previously, how did you do it?

Sorry...I should have had a go at setting this all up beforehand :(

More info - as soon as I enter my login information and click finish, it says "DSL Interface Configuration Error; Please double check your configuration information" and it asks me to try again.
Same thing even if I try the default user@xtrabb.co.nz with the supplied password - that doesn't login either.

Update - if I use the Telecom-supplied router it works perfectly. So, something connection-related in my Netcomm is not setup correctly.

You don't need a username or password anymore. user@xtrabb.co.nz and a password of password will see you right.

The default setup of the netcomm didn't work for me. I had to remove the wan connection and re add it with vlan myself.

Silly question, but may I ask if this is a VDSL modem?

The one that you used for your adsl will probably not work

You are clearly the man. I just deleted the one they had in there and created a new one as you suggested. It all seems to be working now.

For the record here's what the settings were before/after.

Now to setup my wireless setup again, and NAT...

Quick query (I'm sure there will be more of these) how much should I realistically expect on a speedtest from the Telecom page, running over wireless? With a wired connection I get 40 MB/s down, but on wired it's around 20. Does that sound right?

Half the rate sounds about right. You have a lot of extra factors over wifi such as radio congestion, issues with wifi coverage through walls and the quality of the ap.

That's why everyone on here says do a speed test wired. Then if the speeds are slow over wifi try changing channels and use thr myriad of apps today for phones.

sounds about right

the max i can get from my wifi is about 38Mbps with a 62Mbps vdsl connection. its maxing out the wifi (says its connected at 65Mbps but wifi tends to loose about 40% due to its design)

Im in an area with next to know other wifi round (neighbors are a fair distance away)

Hmm stuck trying to setup my network on the new router. File sharing isn't working - I keep getting prompted to login. I had port forwarding working perfectly whereby I could use TightVNC to connect remotely, but now it refuses to connect.
I am trying to copy over the settings from my old router to this one (it won't allow me to directly import the config file, sadly)...anyone able to help here?

Also unable to access network share drives on the desktop - keep getting prompted for a password (again!). Sigh.

Update:

- network sharing is now working, so that's all sorted

- port forwarding is another thing not working properly but that can wait for the moment
- remote devices (laptop etc) can connect to the router, but since I added MAC filtering, they don't have internet access (which they did previously). I've copied and pasted the MAC addresses from my old router configuration to make sure. Also deleted and retyped them all manually to make sure, but to no avail. I've disabled MAC filtering and web traffic is flowing again, but I want to get filtering working. I set my wireless security settings to be the same as my old router (Mixed WPA2/WPA-PSK) and WPA/MAPI encryption is set to TKIP+AES, same as the old one. Do these sound correct?
