Hopefully they spend a bit of money on the back end, really annoying how they call everything calls on the bill e.g. from my last bill:
559 Mobile data calls
51 text messaging calls

I like what they are doing, a good way to break from the bureaucratic monolith Telecom still is, they just need to get rid of all the lawyers now.

Well guess the Telecom NZ name will be up for grabs eventually then.

I think Telecom is a better name than Spark.
People are more familiar with the brand and it has a good reputation these days since the crap CEO Theresa Gattung left.

I like the new name! When Gen-i rebranded the absorbed Computerland franchises it took a while, but the overall rebranding made it far more recognizable. Plus my Gen-i shirts were so much cooler than the Computerland ones :P

The Telecom name has a staid, stodgy sort of connotation to me - Spark is definitely more fun.

Great idea.
They need to get away from that Telecom noose!

Its amazing how many people still havent got that Telecom dont own or have anything to do with 'the network' (Chorus) anymore - and havent for years. Still hear people blaming 'telecom' for anything that ever happens.

Changing the name away from Telecom may help it be identified differently.

It's an odd name for a company that's really been behind the curve in recent history(vdsl, voip etc) for whatever reason(protecting other revenue streams presumably).

As for ShowmeTV/streaming what they need to do is partner with Sky and TVNZ for digital rights because without those big shows both hold it's dead in the water for targeting the people who already download/stream TV.

Great idea! “Spark”s a bit sucky, and will date quickly, but “Telecom” is so 90's
.. and is associated in my mind with the monopolistic uncaring faceless organisation... that it was :) not so long ago...
“Xtra” was a good try but now's associated with Yahoo and compromised email..

Gen-i's name hardly inspires good thoughts either, having worked there previously, maybe they should rename to Spark-i. I was at cland during the tail end of the merger and if anything it just killed the culture there :P

Not a fan of Spark, like its scribble logo it says to me they got a bunch of 5 year olds in a focus group to come up with a logo and now name...

For me, they have to come out better than sky, at least equivalent to overseas based subscription (hulu Netflix amazon etc). If all they do is just reselling Sky, I'm not interested in it at all. I guess if you're sports fan, you'll still want sky

Agree on VoIP, but telecom launched vdsl before Vodafone, slingshot, or orcon. The three biggest other ISPs.

And I doubt sky or tvnz has much in the way of digital rights. That suggests they are paying for something g they aren't using, which would be silly.

So grammatically, Spark is a verb (and a noun). Changing the name indicates Telecom's intention to be a company of action and innovation. This is a very smart marketing strategy IMO, especially in light of the recent branding of their broadband products (Ultra Fibre and Ultra VDSL) and the announcement of their pending ShowMeTV service. Nice work Telecom.
