KiwiNZ: Lots of coroporations rebrand

International Business Machines----- IBM
General Motors Corporation---------- GM
Teal------------------------------------- Air New Zealand
BOAC............................................ British Airways

To name just a few. Rebranding gives the opportunity to renew and refresh, its not a bad thing.

But those names still mean the same thing.  Most abbreviations.   Spark in no way abbreviates the name Telecom NZ..

Bit of a long bow quoting TEAL as most people under 50 will have no idea what that was..

In 50 years how many will remember Telecom?

A more recent change was Datsun to Nissan

Telecom itself is a 'rebrand' as it was originally NZ Post Office back in whenever (80s?)

Back in  1986.  When I was with Telecom  I went thru about 4 name changes  with different internal companies,  but each one had Telecom in the name.  There was a suggestion back in 1990 when Bell Atlantic and Ameritech bought us that the name be changed to kiwi Bell.  From memory the proposed logo looked this this..

Kiwi Bell

kawaii:
ALTRON: Expanded 4G coverage would of been better than a superficial name change.

I doubt that'll happen, I mean, this is the same company that has remained with Yahoo after constant problems then there was the 'awesome' Bebo phone - I sometimes wonder whether those making the decisions are either getting close to retirement or completely out of touch given whom they form relationships with. Honestly at this point I'm wondering whether they're going to have an arrangement with MySpace and launch a smartphone.

I noted this morning there's now 4G in porirua, wellington.

Progress :)

A nice piece of feel-good re-branding marketing. IMO, as pointless as the times Telecom has changed their logo from:

to:

to:

Telecom really does need this rebrand considering people still think Telecom own all of the lines etc and blame them for not providing internet access in "middle of nowhere location a,b,c".

This

And that there still seems to be a belief that Telecom is still tax payer owned and the need for a refresh.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Will this effect bill payee info.

i.e when I pay it's to "Telecom NZ Ltd" and then telecoms bank account number.

Will the payee name need to change, or is it just the bank account number that matters?

Payee doesn't matter (at least with Westpac), you can put "Fred's Discount Phones" in there for all the system cares.

Hopefully this solves the problem where old people wont change their phone from telecom because they have always used telecom.

The rebrand is certainly a big bold move.
I don't think many people associate Chorus with the old Telecom at all - unless you're in the industry, or pay a bit of attention to NZ business - there's no association between the two.
I'm sure that's part of the decision for the name change.  Shake off the old image on the monopoly.
I think it's a bold move because it covers the whole Telecom group - including Gen-i etc.

Ultimately it's all going ahead regardless of what we think.
The machine is ticking over - and they seem to be making all of the right moves. Getting the new website in place well before switching over, putting up the SparkShould site to gather feedback (although none of it seemed positive at all).
They made a smart choice about changing the name of TV offering to stop upsetting other local companies.
It's more difficult to avoid that for other 'Spark' companies.  I really like this Spark. I wonder how much Telecom's spark will impact them?
August is coming pretty quickly - just over a month now.
I guess the signage on their Head Office will come down towards the end of the month?

Sure, there's no association at all. So much so that when someone's copper connection goes bad they complain of "Telecom" regardless of ISP, because for a lot of people "Telecom" is still "copper". They didn't get the memo about separation, Chorus, etc.

I've heard Telecom are counting down to Spark on their Intranet with all the old Commercials.

I like the SPOT ones...  http://www.nzonscreen.com/title/spot-telecom-commercials-1991
