Hey, it couda been a lot worse: It's lucky that he didn't thread that cable through the open door, thereby trapping it in the open position. tongue-out

I'm glad we have Northpower up here that do our fibre installs. :)

I'm wondering if the installer thought that by drilling the hole close to the floor on the garage side he would go under the sliding door?
Or did he not even realise that there was a sliding door there and thought it was just a walk through?
And then the different floor levels...

But hey at least the guy can now stop the door from being closed, just slide in a rod!

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

I'm wondering whether there should be new standards or a code of conduct for wiring new houses to ensure a draw wire from the ETP to the central location and star wiring out from there? Even if the customer didn't want to put their router in the cabinet the ONT could go there and just be patched through.

Jaxson: Not having been through a fibre install myself, what do you get out of the ONT? - an Ethernet port?

The ONT has four Ethernet ports and two phone ports but typically only one or two of those ports are used. Wi-Fi is completely separate. At my place the ONT is in the garage and the Wi-Fi AP is in a central cupboard.

Thanks.

Are companies such as Spark and Vodafone providing wireless AP's as part of their migration/install offerings?
Just the use of wifi devices has exploded and I can't see any install not realistically requiring this as well.

surfisup1000:
Vertical video really bugs me and you see examples on the news where they alter the video to make it look like the sides have been blurred out. Maybe better than black bars but still awful.

No, blurry crap up the sides makes it harder to watch. Black bars have been fine for decades on widescreen content on a square TV, why there is this trend of enlarging and fuzzing stuff to fill the sides when going the other way is something I dont understand.

The worst issue with video I have is how if you are holding the phone vertical when you start and then turn it horizontal, the whole video ends up sideways. Video recording on phones is just crap regardless (UI wise that is)

Now as for that installation. I have no problem with the installation other than the hole thru the door situation. The customer obviously wanted the ONT in that location and a cable has to go to it. As the taxpayer is paying for the installation, a quick one is all the better by me. If they want to improve the value of their house with a structured cabling system, hidden cables etc then that is up to the home owner.

Probably did before realizing his error.,

Yes. They provide a router and it has wifi.

A Chorus tech friend of mine in Taranaki said an email was circulated to all local fibre techs a few weeks ago saying they were 'exceeding expectations' and they should 'lower their standards'.

Apart from drilling through the door the tech hasn't done anything wrong. He has simply installed it to Chorus' "high" standards they bang on about all the time.

These sorts of things happen all the time because they are simply accidents, why the tech didn't fess up and tell the customer I dont know because then this would have all been avoided.

I'm quite pleased it has been viewed as many times as it has because it may make Chorus rethink their policy on the rubbish way they are allowing installs to happen. It's something I've been banging on about for ages now and am always met with the response of 'it all costs more money' but how much has this little bit of publicity costs them I wonder?
I hope we see more of these cr4p installs be made public so that Chorus are forced to do something about it.

michaelmurfy: Ugh the comments like "free WiFi for a year" and "the guy must have been really sparked up".

Don't people understand still spark is just the service provider? How many times does it have to be said?

No, they don't. People are ignorant, and often also stupid. Sounds like this guy got his problem sorted in the end, shame a lot of morons who've seen it will blame Spark rather than the installer specifically.

Not ignorant, not stupid. Example a Doctor is a Spark customer, contacts Spark to have UFB installed. Spark starts the process. People turn up and finally the jobs done but botched. Who should he call?.... Spark. In these
cases the main contractor and the only person the Doctor can correspond to remedy is Spark so to him it Spark that is at fault not some nameless sub-contractor.

Hey Mike: Guess what? We agree! will wonders never cease?

I once installed a socket outlet in a bedroom by using an extendable drill bit and drilling down the wall. This particular wall seemed to contain a large number of dwangs and took ages to drill through. Once I had finished the job the lady of the house opened the inbuilt bathroom cupboard....surprised

Thank God it was a mates place.... Off to Mitre 10 to buy a nice new cupboard

sbiddle: I don't understand why this person wanted their ONT in the hallway. Yes drilling through the door is inexcusable, but the new hybrid cable can only be surface mounted (no capping will be used) so under the circumstances this probably represents the best job possible for the location.

Funny, in the "old" days when Telecom came and wired up your extra extension etc they hid the cable. I think people expect the same service from Chorus, I know I do.

Perhaps some people have had too much exposure to Sky installs and have become desensitised to crap wiring.
