I have to ask, is the free wifi actually even worth the hassle of driving around to find a telecom hotspot ?

Im on a $16/month skinny mobile a/c, that has more data/month than Ive been able to even use on my ph.
How many geeks are so desperate for 'free' internet .....

The only instance it might be of use, is with a laptop, away from home & desperately needing internet access. But honestly, how often is that.
Who here really wants to be lurking around outside a payphone, with laptop or tablet in hand, on some dark damp night ?

A couple of the wellington train stations have payphones in close proximity to the platform.  While I'm not too fussed with my iphone, my wifi only ipad mini loves it.

I wouldn't drive to find one, but it's handy when walking around the cbd.

What do you do on your phone?

Watch video? Stream music? Hell I can rip through 1GB a month easily just browsing reddit.

Waiting for buses/trains/etc if you could get free wifi that's great. I don't think anyone is going driving specifically to find a hotspot. It's a nice value add.

I registered for free WiFi  and I'm on skinny last week.  Got the code back but yesterday when I tied to access it i got this screen and can't get past it.   Wonder if it's gotten anything to do with my number being ported from Spark about  18 months ago..

CrushKill: I put in my account number and the 'phone' number from the online bill, although i have no phone line - it said one of them was not correct. (It was an 08 number). Will contact support and try and get them to sort it.

Well, after a lot of back and forth with support, still can't get a voucher. I just keep getting an error message saying my account number is wrong (it isn't) or my phone number is wrong (we have no phone line - its a naked broadband account). Even support tried my account details and couldn't get it to work.

Had no trouble getting the voucher. The phone number linked with our account (016 area code, we have naked broadband) and account number both easily attainable by logging in to Spark. Logged in to Lightbox (haven't logged in since I canceled the subscription at the end of the free 12 month period) and was immediately asked if I had a voucher code, which I entered. Code accepted, we're off!

I have exactly the same problem. I'm on Fibre 200+ with landline (upgraded from ADSL in Feb '16) and I can't get the voucher. I get the same error every time I enter my details:

"Sorry, there was an error processing your Spark account number or phone number. Please ensure your account and phone number are correct, and try again"

Tried to get some help from online spark support - promised followup phone call never happend.

I'll keep an eye on this thread.

I signed up OK as we have a broadband plan with Spark which I wont be changing btw.... Got the Spark code number ok

and Lightbox site accepted that with no request for credit card details...about a month back now....

If it had asked for CCard details I would have cancelled out immediately...as I would have regarded it as a scam to get you onboard to be charged

at some later time....Also I trust Spark wont try on some change to my broadband plan....

Alot of Lightbox is stuff already screened on TV here but we have watched 37 Days and currently the Lucky Man show....good for when Freeview channels run out of watchable programmes....

Its nice to be able to watch in HD as our Sat Freeview is only pumped up HD....

As long as Spark and  Lightbox play ball for this freebie over the twelve moths we will probably watch some of the TV etc....on my PS3 btw...

FYI....Laurie

Yeah, that's the issue I was having also.

Five support / help desk people later, and they still can't get a voucher, or one that works at least. I did get an email yesterday that they haven't all actually dropped dead or something and are still trying to figure it out. :-D

Got a voucher number, what I don't have is much idea where their hotspots are: their site map is down. If anyone's got a map that's more or less current for Christchurch I'd be interested to see it.

The only places I know of anywhere near where I go my choices are sit on a rubbish bin or hang out in front of a police station. There's no phone booths handy to where I catch busses from.

Just tried the site map and it seemed to be working fine zooming in to areas.

Spark tells me even naked broadband have a number, listed in the bill - this is the number to use.

Only problem is that my spark broadband on 4G is on a 021 number. Oh well I'm only trying out the google cast from the lightbox app. And it looks like I can't do it without either giving a credit card number and going through the hassle of cancelling before TVNZ start charging anyway. Or my partner can remember what password she used.

She can figure out the google cast herself :)

Not sure why you bring TVNZ to this - LightBox is a Spark service. But yes, I understand the bit about "going through the hassle of cancelling before TVNZ Spark start charging anyway"

Not sure where you got the 021 number from, sparks wireless broadband is on an 027 number which should work fine. And with the voucher code you won't even need to enter a credit card when signing up to Lightbox
