LeroyJenkins: Sweet. I think? This stuff still confuses me though, so I registered to this site just to ask the following.

Does someone want to quickly explain the gst of this..

1 - What did kind of network did Telecom first announce, and how does this differ?

2 - What Advantages/Disadvantages does this give Telecom to Voda?

3 - What are the I-phone, and new handset ramifications?

1. GSM 850MHZ with EDGE GPRS + 2100mhz HSPA in major cities
2. 24 current networks in operation, better coverage footprint than 900mhz UMTS and currently a much larger range of handsets.
3. IPhone 3G is built with both GSM 850mhz / EDGE and 850MHZ UMTS / 2100mhz UMTS so This handset will be 3g nationwide. Huge benefits, Vodafone wont have a chance with the Iphone until some time next year when a 900mhz UMTS version comes possibly

So over all Telecom will have a massive technology edge and coverage will be better. But the question is when this will happen??

The original post said there may be an announcement on this on the 8th August? Was there anything? Am interested to see what their plans are and whether it may change Vodafone's plans.

I've read throughout the site people expecting the new Telecom to be in place by November and to use the new iPhone 3G on it. But from talking to various people (reasonably reliable sources), Telecom won't be rolling it out anywhere near Nov (did anyone expect it to be ready on time?!), and from reading this thread it seems to confirm what I've been hearing for weeks now!

It is all this thread. I replied on the first page saying that the press information had a single sentence about this announcement (“Revenue from IT services for the quarter grew nearly 20% when compared to the same period last year and the buildof our new WCDMA mobile network is also progressing apace. We are evaluating the further potential of WCDMA at 850 MHz.”)

Reading on pages 2 and 3 you will find tht based on this and some other comments it seems Telecom is going to be late with the deployment on its new network.

Rumours are that there was no information about the late deployment because this could impact share prices.

It's all in between the posts, er, lines.

Ahh right ok, I read that but didn't think that was the rumoured announcement (I was foolishly expecting an announcement that would say more than basically nothing). As for it affecting the share price, don't know how much of a difference it would have made seeing as they announced a 30% fall in 4th quarter earnings...

Well I guess late is better than never, and at the very least it'll stimulate more investment amongst the telcos in the mobile network area. We're more than a little long overdue.

Have to say, very impressed by how quick the responses were! I've been reading the forums for a while but only just signed up to write a post :)

Yes, sometimes the big announcements come in small pieces. This was something that I was expecting more, but at the end of the day we can only wait...

But why is Telecom deploying 850Mhz WCDMA??? (and why Vodafone 900Mhz)??? When we already have 2100Mhz quite common in use around the world, why not just continue that, and extend coverage and penetration instead???

850 and 900 networks are far cheaper to deploy due to the greater range of each cellsite (which means less sites to build.) It is a physics thing that lower frequency radio carries further.

Most GSM operators around the world are working towards these lower frequency networks for rural coverage as the technology becomes available.

The reason Telecom has to use 850 and Vodafone has to use 900 is those are the bands they already "own", Vodafone can't just build an 850 network in Telecom's spectrum and vice versa.

Indeed the game now is maximising 3G coverage and ensuring you can deliver services at the extremity of the network.

2100mhz has capacity advantages but as Next G in Aussie has proved, they can offer pretty impressive speeds and connectivity at the edge of the network some 3-4 x the distance that a 2100 mhz cell can offer.

I think the calculation is 3 x 2100mhz cell to 1 x 850mhz cell. I could be wrong on the exact figure but put it this way nether Telecom nor Vodafone could afford to build a 97% population coverage network on 2100mhz alone.

2100 has very poor building penetration. At tech in the brick buildings, 2g is solid thru most of it. Stepping inside some of them and you lose 3g totally within 3-4m of the doorway. 850 or 900MHz will give it the same indoor penetration that GSM has at the moment. So i'm hoping they dont just reserve it for in the middle of nowhere sites since its the city that has more people wanting to use a phone in a building.

The Dominion Post today is reporting that Ericsson may be part of any 850MHz UMTS network. I mentioned on here a few months ago that Ericsson were trying to get back into bed with Telecom after the AMPS/DAMPS shutdown and move to Alcatel-Lucent. Ericsson's Next G network is the best 3G network in the world bar none and is certainly being used to show off to many perspective customers as a test bed.

Yeah I saw that today on Stuff.co.nz as well...

Telecom's general manager of mobile Martin Butler said last month that Telecom was in discussions with suppliers. Sources said the investment was now a foregone conclusion and Swedish telco equipment maker Ericsson was poised to carry out the 3G upgrade, working alongside Telecom's long-standing technology outsourcing partner Alcatel-Lucent.

hmm, its all but confirmed now and with Ericsson building it, it will be another high quality network along side Telstra Aussie.

I wonder if they will still continue with a GSM build, its live in a lot of rural areas now in the South Island but not so much in the City, i.e. CHCH

Exciting times ahead, CDMA will be gone, sooner than 5 years if this happens!

I've just heard from someone within Alcatel Lucent that they beleive they are still in the running to supply the new WCDMA 850MHz equipment contract, and that no contracts have been offically signed or internally announced.

Not sure if the media reports are 100% accurate on this one.

Telecom still have to offically announce the plan to go with WCDMA 850Mhz.

well I guess they would have to be considering Alcatel Lucent, they have already done most of build nation wide for GSM and 2100UMTS.

I guess if they can do the same job Ericsson did in Aussie they will sell alot more networks at 850mhz as well! They also have the internal core infrastructure and Telecom will be mindful of that.

I think its 50/50 really as to network builder of choice.

Your right Telecom have made no offical announcements yet, i hear it could be a month away. They have to get it right and also think about the concequences of delaying a launch until 850MHZ is set. If they do go 850MHZ WCDMA the GSM network will be shut down most likely, but from where i stand, bring on 850MHZ UMTS !!!

We wait with baited breath.
