gajan:

There is a process that we work through with the device manufacturers to certify that VoLTE on their devices works well with our network, this is a development process that takes time and effort from both the operator and the handset manufacturer. We're always working to try and onboard more devices where possible, but several factors come into play. Unfortunately even if the phone's hardware supports VoLTE it's not guaranteed we'll be able to get it working.

Yes.  I've had that experience a bit.  Many thanks to gajan for his help with this to date.  I was completely bamboozled until gajan weighed in on this issue.  I hope some improvement will happen sometime with my issue.

Have just made a call on my Huawei Mate 20 Pro and have noticed that it has not switched back to 3G and has stayed connected to 700MHz LTE... I thought it might have been a fluke so I hung up and called again and can confirm I am getting VoLTE on Skinny using a Mate 20 Pro here in Tauranga

EDIT: Just threw the Skinny Sim in my iPhone 8 Plus and I am also getting VoLTE on it aswell

Hmm.... I don't see VoLTE listed in your notification bar, (at the top).  Gagan, (forum Gent and very clever high up Telecom tech),  has turned that off for me in my Skinny account, as it was causing many problems receiving Forwarded calls.   So, my phone, Oppo Find X2 lite on the Skinny network, shows 4G but NOT VoLTE anymore and it does receive forwarded calls now.  So I'm not familiar with Huawei but would expect that it would show VoLTE in the notification bar if it was indeed using it.

What I'm trying to say is 4G connection doesn't necessarily equate to VoLTE.

I have the VoLTE option ticked in the mobile options of my Mate 20 Pro and on my iPhone 8 Plus... yesterday when I made a call it would drop back to 3G but today it stayed on 4G.

My Mate 20 Pro has never showed a VoLTE icon even when I was using it on Optus in Australia.

Also the screenshot is from my iPhone not my Mate 20 Pro

The 4G icon is right there after where it has the carrier name, and given there's an active voice call on screen it's reasonable to assume it's a VoLTE call, otherwise it would say 3G at the top of the screen.

4G ≠ VoLTE, but LTE = 4G. It's the Vo bit that's the extra here. You can have a 4G (LTE) connection for data, but not be able to make a voice call over it, and the phone negotiates back to 3G for the call duration.

My phone currently shows 4g all the time for data, but does not do VoLTE even tho it's enabled on the phone settings. gagan has turned it off at skinnys end.

This is what he told me:

”When your phone was showing VoLTE, it’s to let you know that voice calls will use 4G (as well as data when your using that). Now that I’ve disabled that on your account voice calls will use 3G (so your phone switches down to the 3G network for voice), but as it shows 4G when you browsing etc it will still use the faster 4G network for that. Think of it as 2x different networks (3G and 4G) as well as 2x different services (Voice and data). So we’ve altered it temporarily.

Our team are still looking into it……..."

My point is that when my phone was enabled for VoLTE this shows a notification. It does not now. Neither does yours.

To tell if an iPhone is using VoLTE:

Settings > General > About

Scroll down to Network and tap on Service Provider, if it changes to "IMS Voice" or "IMS Voice and Text" then its on VoLTE or VoWIFI (2degrees only currently).

I haven't put up a screenshot from my phone, so you don't know what it shows! Assuming you're talking about @gordo92, then that's an iPhone, which will only show GPRS/3G/4G (and 5G with the right device). The VoLTE toggle is in the settings, and if it's making a voice call and 4G is showing, then it must be a VoLTE call. It doesn't show VoLTE at the top of the screen.

The “VoLTE” icon behaviour changes between devices and can even change between releases of software. So if the VoLTE icon is not there it doesn’t mean that your phone is not using VoLTE....

This is the case with my unlocked Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

It never showed VoLTE icon while I was using it on Optus 4G in Australia which I had VoLTE on and it doesn’t show it with Spark/Skinny either. The toggle is in the mobile network menu but that is the only reference my Mate 20 shows about using VoLTE.

As for the iPhone as has been said about it never shows a icon for VoLTE, but does have a toggle in the Mobile menu.

Either way it appears that it has been switched on, well at least in Tauranga 😁😎

liquidcore: Can I please check whether the Galaxy S20+ (purchased from Noel Leeming) is meant to be able to use VoLTE on Skinny? Or has it not been certified yet?

Gajan if you could! I just slapped a spark sim in my S20+ and it isn't provisioning. It is running 2d firmware but Voda VoLTE seems to work just fine!
