@noroad: These are approved handsets - Manual network selection is nothing new the reason for this feature is if your handset does not attach to a roaming mobile network you can force it to action a RAU

Openmedia does not have an issue with the handset attaching to a network but VoLTE roaming not working

I want to know why it took 12 hours for roaming to work.

I did and it still did not work for 12 hours. I was just about to go get a t-mobile sim and rechecked it and it had started working.

Roaming links could of been down or planned work could be any number of reasons, Planned work on the VLR in the US the list goes on

So the latest from Skinny is that my sim card might have degraded over time

As you have indicated the issue is happening a lot often. One thing we can try is a replacing the SIM card as they do degrade over time and could be a card issue. I recommend when you are back in New Zealand to grab a new Skinny SIM and contact us on 0800 275 878 for a SIM SWAP and we could go from there.

First I've heard of this, but I know One have been SIM swapping for 5G support issues. Might grab a new SIM and see if it helps as I've got some more trips in a couple of weeks,

Anyway I'm currently in Sydney waiting for the last leg home. Full VoLTE support on Telstra 4G.

One way to double check this on Android is

  • # <star> # <star> 4636 <star> # <star> #
  • Phone Information
  • Appropriate SIM Card
  • 3 dot bar top right
  • IMS Service Status

@openmedia Degraded SIM card bahahaha this gets more messed up the more you talk to Skinny

VoLTE has zero to do with the SIM card it is a handset / network feature

SIM cards don't degrade they either work or don't you need to stop and really think about what I have told you more than once!!

I looked after SIM cards from the technology side for 10+ years in VodafoneNZ

OneNZ swapping SIM cards for 5G issues is a just a failure of front line support

If you fully understand how SIM cards work and the purpose of them then you would understand Skinny support is feeding you misinformation

For One my daughter's partner had major issues on his iPhone due to an older SIM card. SIM swap resolved it.

Regarding Skinny - yeah.. not impressed with the response. As useful as data is when travelling, there are still plenty of times I need to send or receive a traditional voice call when roaming.

Actually I probably make more voice calls when I'm roaming than I do at home.

Get a tested and supported handset so when things don't work you can get support

I tried a supported handset - Nokia 7.2 - same issues.

Works with LTE in NZ and AU - doesn't work overseas elsewhere.

@openmedia Go read the SparkNZ website and the list of VoLTE roaming supported handsets!

The Nokia 7.2 is not supported cause it works in AU lucky for you and just cause it works does not mean it is supported!

I don't know how I can make this any clearer to you. You have it fixed in your head that it should work. VoLTE roaming is very different to the way roaming Voice calls use to work over 2G/3G - https://www.spark.co.nz/help/mobile/device-help/device_compatibility_list/

I provided the same information on page 2 in this very thread and then you tell me it is supported.

Skinny confirmed over a year ago that the Nokia 7.2 works with VoLTE providing it had the most recent Android build. It isn't an overseas device, but a Spark compatible one bought locally.

While I was roaming I was asked to switch back to that device because they belived VolTE would work, and it didn't. Then they blamed it on SIM card degradation.

Regarding the support matrix - this is going to be huge for people who move between networks and our overseas visitors. It means returning to the dark days where you have to buy your phone via your carrier, or go down the iPhone route.

@openmedia You are still not getting it just cause Skinny said it would work with VoLTE does not mean it is going to work with VoLTE roaming!

I don't care what Skinny say about the SIM as I can tell you 150% it is not SIM card related

Its 100% the VoLTE profile for the local network you are roaming on is not in the phone.
