Hi. I'm new to the Smart Modem / Mesh combo. Searching long massive threads is pretty tricky on this forum. Is there a FAQ page for this hardware anywhere? I have some questions that no doubt have been asked again and again. For now though:

1. How do you update firmware on these, the modem and the mesh unit? Does Spark push out firmware automatically? Is there a way to check for updates?
2. How do you dim the LED on the Mesh unit? When I try, I get the error message "syncledconfig all  msg send error" when I press the "save" button. Most of the pages in the Mesh's web config are blank!!

The Mesh Unit's firmware version is: 1.00.04. The Smart Modem's firmware is: v6.00.15 build05.

Thanks.

1. these are pushed out automatically from our device management platform. Your on the latest versions.

Interestingly your mesh has made me realize mines not updated. Quirk of the particular unit i have though to be clear.

2. I'm not sure that's actually possible. when the mesh is in mesh mode, it will take all configuration from the smart modem, webui will redirect you out.

Thanks for that.

Yup it's in Mesh Mode and I connected via its ip address in Chrome. Interestingly, I can change the name of the Mesh in the settings, and I can see the WiFi settings, but the LED setting fails.

Changing the admin password failed too. It complained about my chosen 8 character password, saying it was supposed to be 8 to 12 characters long.

By the way I had a weird drop out today. I've been running the Smart Modem for not quite 1 week with no problems. I bought the Mesh today, click and collect, and installed with Ethernet. This evening all my devices lost connectivity for about 1 minute, including my Ethernet connected devices. So I presume the Smart Modem had a fit. :-/

Yup. We are working on that issue. It's quite a tough one work with while we are still all in lockdown..

Can certainly be a bit tiring some days, but it's good to have feedback from those that are a little more detailed :)

This issue won't escape me though, the partner is sure to not let me forget.

After reading through the whole post i decided to get one of these smart modems.

Funny because I had a ac5300 dlink ultra modem sold that for $350 and bought the bigpipe "unbranded" smart modem on trade me for only $35.

I am very impressed with the performance so far. I have it connected to now internet 900/500 line. Constant 300down on all wifi devices, which is the same as what I was getting on the D Link.

Now is there a way to get firmware updates manually? Thanks

Hey guys,

Issue is being looked into. I've got it replicating daily here so very aware of it.

Requires some special gear that's locked in the office right now. So having to do some alternative options.

Apologies for the delays.

Thanks Hio, glad to know it is at least still being looked at.

The disconnects aren't terribly frequent -- but as disconnects so often do, they manage to find the most inopportune times to occur. During VCs midsentence for instance. Or less work, more for fun -- while in a dungeon run. ;)

Happy to provide any logs or info that may support the resolve efforts; let me know.

Question: Is there anything in the Smart Modem and/or Mesh unit that would block SSDP UDP/multicast on the 5Ghz? I have an app that sends a UDP broadcast packet and receives a UDP response. It works on the 2.4ghz, but not the 5ghz ("5G RE"). The same device works when connected to our old router on 2.4ghz, but not on the new router/mesh at 5ghz.

Shouldn't be. I'm pretty sure it works.

I'll test that specifically though tomorrow. While I'll say I've used ssdp multicast over it, I did not confirm which ap I was on at the time.

That'd be awesome. Thanks.

Ok, after further testing it's not just 5ghz. It's the Mesh unit. Some more info: My Android app sends a broadcast UDP/SSDP packet to the network on port 1900 to the broadcast address 239.255.255.250. All UPnP devices on the LAN reply to it. Pretty simple.

Network setup:

  • I have a Smart Modem connected to a network switch via internal house wiring.
  • The Mesh Unit is plugged into said network switch.
  • Various UPnP devices are plugged into the switch also.

  • For completeness, I'll also mention that I also have an old Huawei HG630b modem plugged into a network port on the Smart Modem via a 5m cable. Most things are disabled in the Huawei to avoid conflicts, except for the 2.4ghz WiFi on a different channel. This is because my network cupboard is metal and my security camera's WiFi needs to penetrate this and the metal garage door. So the Huawei is as close to the garage door as possible.

Test results:

  • When connected to the Mesh at 5ghz (connected to "5G RE" in the Smart Modem's "Connected Devices" page), no replies are received!!! This is both on an AVD on my PC, and also a real device.
  • When I turn off the Mesh and connect to the Smart Modem, everything works again (connected to "5G")!
  • If I turn the Mesh Unit back on, disconnect and reconnect to the WiFi, then it stops working again (connected to "5G RE").
  • When connected to my old Huawei 2.4ghz router using my 2.4ghz-only cellphone, everything works as expected.
  • When I connect to "2.4G RE" with my cellphone, it doesn't work.
  • When I walk to the other end of the house, leaving the Mesh turned on, disconnect my cellphone from WiFi and reconnect (i.e. connected to "2.4G") it works!

So something is up with the Mesh Unit and UDP traffic. Any ideas please? I'm not sure if it's the broadcast that's being blocked, or the replies.

Very weird findings, I'll test that specific port and address next....

I didn't have any issues when i was testing yesterday

Thank you. I'm sending and receiving on the same socket, port 1900.

Does anyone have any info on the USB port on this device? Can it power a 2.5" HDD? Transfer speed? SMB access? Reliable? What DLNA server is onboard?
