Oh this gets better. Skinny now won't handle any more support calls until I've performed a SIM swap.

Which I can only do "Monday to Friday 10:30AM to 4:30PM".

I'm guessing this also excludes public holidays.

What would they say if you were running a eSIM?

I really think access to any more support calls is irrelevant. It's overall support for that device from both the manufacturer and the local Telco providing cellular access that matters. It doesn't look like that support exists for that phone for VoLTE roaming.

A couple of things here.

  • I haven't launched VoLTE roaming in India yet. Its currently being tested by 2 carrier partners in India - unfortunately the help desk has steered you wrong re the availability of VoLTE roaming in India.
  • Unfortunately domestic VoLTE capability doesn't guarantee VoLTE roaming capability.

    • Our website lists the Spark ranged devices and their capability https://www.spark.co.nz/help/mobile/device-help/device_compatibility_list/
    • as you've mentioned the Nokia G60 5G isn't Spark ranged, but from what you've said it works on VoLTE in NZ and Australia?, so I'd expect it will work in India after the launch (but can't guarantee this)

  • Launching VoLTE roaming with carrier partners required significant testing and effort. We are working with our carrier partners to launch bilateral VoLTE roaming as quickly as we can, focusing on:

    • carriers/countries that have, or are turning off 3G very soon and have no 2G - ie voice service continuity
    • carriers/countries that have, or are turning off 3G very soon but still have 2G - ie service experience improvement for voice
    • carriers that are 4G only - ie coverage expansion, service experience etc

Hey @andyb - thanks for the details

As per Skinny's request I've now performed my SIM swap. Lets see if that makes any difference for my next couple of trips.

Note we had the same issues in Indonesia/Bali with my Wife's Nokia G20 which is a supported VoLTE device.

Interestingly VoWiFi works on both of our phones when in NZ and managed to occasionally work in Indonesia.

@openmedia the Nokia G20 is not a supported handset by SparkNZ or Skinny for VoLTE why do you keep saying it is?

It is a VoLTE handset but not supported

As stated SIM swap is not going to do anything to add value to your issue with VoLTE / Roaming as VoLTE is not a SIM feature

And yet I was able to disable mobile data and make a voice call on the hotel's Wifi in Bali. Odd.

I haven't launched VoLTE roaming in Indonesia yet either, its not going to work on any carrier or in any country until its been fully tested and approved for launch.......

We are live with around 10 carriers in 9 countries so far, Indonesia and India aren't in those yet.

We have another 13 launches occuring over the next couple of weeks.

@andyb when you say ' I ' you mean SparkNZ correct?

What is the current list of supported countries for VoLTE roaming?

@openmedia This is why I kept saying it is not SIM card related

Correct, I head up international roaming for Spark and am responsible for most things roaming.

We are currently live in 8 countries (I miscounted), with one or more carriers.

Australia
Denmark
Israel
Japan
Malaysia
South Korea
UK (goes live tomorrow)
USA
