mortiis33: VPN, Proxies etc have been tried and do not work. I have a premium RS account, and cannot use
it to it's full capacity.

The fact you have a premium account is irrelevant to Telecom, all RS data is treated the same and always will be treated the same on Big Time, we can't and therefore won't differentiate 'premium' vs any other account type.  The only way you will get full speed to RS is a plan other than Big Time.

I have noticed a slow down for rapidshare on business advanced plan. Used to easily get 700kbps, now get around consistent 250kbps on a premium account. Doozy, are you sure measures haven't been put in place for all the plans?

This question has been answered:

Doozy, are you able to elaborate on the rationale behind why Rapidshare needs to remain capped after 2am when bit torrent doesn't for example?

It is not possible to to time of day shaping for this traffic type.

and just so its clear, again

doozy: all RS data is treated the same and always will be treated the same on Big Time

Definitely not being controlled via anything Telecom is doing, no traffic management on any plans outside of Big Time.

To be honest though, can we really set anything in stone based on what a telecom drone tells us? The small print tells us "all traffic is shaped(is Tivo shaped? apparently not?!!?? Why is national traffic shaped?), especially during peak hours. However, the OPs experience shows some traffic is shaped more than others.

We all know the company has a long history of shonky and frankly dodgy practice with its internet arm Xtra.

First there was the original go "all you can eat" plan back in the early 2000s and the(behind the customers back-"its a newer, faster plan")forced migration debarcle, then the Go Large failure and now this.

Constant failing to deliver, misleading advertisement and plain old deception are all valuable tools in the Xtra toolkit.
I would take anything telecom said with an extremely large grain of salt and double and triple check everything and write down names of who told you what.
That way if anything is not as expected you have someone to reference.

In saying that Im with TC cable and so dont really give a crap!

Telecom just continue to irk me ever since trying to throw me off the "all you can eat" plan a few years ago. Had to ring up several months in a row and order them to put me back on the plan until i authorised a plan change, or the plan i was on no longer existed. Twits!

The force is strong with this one!

Rossmnz -- I could not have EVER said that better!
Everything you say is the plain solid truth - and no nothing Telecom does is ever
set into stone (simply because it always goes belly up).

I'm a longtime sufferer of Telecom, been with them since about 1990 and have dealt with
SO much mess with them right from the get-go.

Gents, it's all about making sure that everyone gets a fair share of the pie. Read the thread about "bandwidth hogs" and more importantly all of the comments.

BigTime has mechanisms for trying to make sure everyone gets a "fair" share. The mechanisms aren't perfect, and will evolve over time as how people use the Internet changes. Some people will like these mechanisms, some people will not. You can't please everyone. If you don't like them, it's a free world, there are other choices out there.

@mortiis33 if you don't like whats happening on bigtime, CHANGE PLAN.... Simple. All other telecom plans aren't shaped.

If you want to continue on bigtime, either learn to live with the shaping or change your download method.

I personally can max my line anytime of day with the method I use.

rossmnz: To be honest though, can we really set anything in stone based on what a telecom drone tells us?

First I know the person replied here and I can assure you he's not a drone. Also, remember we don't allow people calling names here.

rossmnz: The small print tells us "all traffic is shaped(is Tivo shaped? apparently not?!!?? Why is national traffic shaped?), especially during peak hours. However, the OPs experience shows some traffic is shaped more than others.

Get over it. It's shapped. It's the plan. It's in the fineprint. If you don't like that plan, choose another plan. Tried other ISPs? Noticed how they all shape, in some cases it seems a lot more than Telecom?

rossmnz: First there was the original go "all you can eat" plan back in the early 2000s and the(behind the customers back-"its a newer, faster plan")forced migration debarcle, then the Go Large failure and now this.

Telecom admitted the Go Large was a failure. They admited it was done in the wrong way. Whoever stayed on Go Large obviously saw a benefit anyway - as in downloading all you can eat, even if it's not at maximum speed. I mean, try getting 80GB or more on another ISP's plans to see how much you will pay for it.

rossmnz: I would take anything telecom said with an extremely large grain of salt and double and triple check everything and write down names of who told you what.

This is valid for any company. I don't trust any large company. But not because of its people. They are not there to make your life hell. Communication within large companies tend to break. It's how it is. Tried the help desk at Vodafone lately? Or called TelstraClear to be put on hold for hours?

rossmnz: In saying that Im with TC cable and so dont really give a crap!

I have to laugh. You are not even a Telecom customer and rant on this topic? You have no reason at all to be ranting about Big Time, since you have no first hand experience on this. Get over it.

Every time I read rantings from someone who doesn't have a reason to rant I just feel the pain those companies go through. They have to make happy people who don't want to be happy.

I was thinking seriously about perhaps changing to Slingshot, but I'm not 100 percent sure as of yet.

Doozy ain't a drone. He knows _exactly_ what he's talking about and confirms what he says with other subject matter experts before posting here if there's any chance something is contentious.

I suggest, _strongly_, that you compare the performance AND price of all the other flat rate residential broadband plans in New Zealand, from providers other that Telecom, before getting so high and mighty about things.

Cheers - N
