To be honest I don't think it's that. I think it's (by the looks) - looks like he's running Windows 8.1 which has issues with the Technicolor routers + DNS along with wireless interference.

Yep, you may well be right. Particularly the FEC errors in the 1 day uptime looked a bit high though.

Do you know what can cause this?

Also, im at the stage where im going to throw some money at this. this is driving me nuts, its been over a month now.

Im wondering if i need to buy another modem to see if it makes any difference. Will this do the trick. DrayTek DV2760 ADSL / VDSL

If you're in Auckland, PM coffeebaron on these forums - he may be able to assist with any wiring issues etc.

If you've tried 3 modems already, you can probably rule that out - but be careful of the Win 8 / Technicolour issue that miichaelmurphy raised earlier. Have you got a non Win 8 machine to test with?

The FEC errors are generally speaking an indication of an issue on the line itself - poor wiring, or some external interference are a couple of the possibilities.

Are you still dealing with Telecom's helpdesk? Where abouts are they with the issue if you are?

I was wondering is it a modem brand/quality thing so i was thinking of trying a totally different unit. I must say im surprised how expensive they are.

My work laptop is windows 7 so i can bring that home one day and try it hard wired and see how it goes

Yea, i think someone else mentioned the symptoms possibly being interference/ line related.
I actually took a look under my house. The line looked fine but its pulled as tight as tight can get and i didnt see any other cables near it or crossing it. I traced it to the point where it went into the ground. There is definitely potential for water to go into the pipe the cable lives in so im not sure if thats an issue with the wire being insulated

Yes, im still dealing with them.
They have requested the trace routes and pings which i have sent them just now.
I wsa really clear with them that i would take a tech and pay for their time to spend a couple of hours to solve this but they didnt seem to like that idea and suggested if i go external to someone else. Ive decided to hold off and send them the stats they want and see what happens. THings are just moving so slowly

If it is my hardware i just want to know and i will upgrade/replace what ever is needed. If its lines then i want them fixed. I assume this is what my line maint charges covers.

Your FEC errors on your original post are epic high.
Are you still receiving those errors?

If so, then it is a wiring issue somewhere. FEC is basically the interleaving on your connection correcting packet errors between the port and your modem. When they have to continually retransmit like that, you're going to experience all sorts of things like errors in downloads, ping (latency) spikes, and ultimately using more data since it has to continually re-transmit packets.

As for Windows 8.1 DNS issue, if this was the problem when you get timeouts, if you ping or tracert the URL (e.g geekzone.co.nz), then you will see it timeout to 198.18.1.XXX.

Is this what could be causing the hanging im seeing? The modem waiting for clean data to come back?

Chorus did come back and re wire my install and i do think it is better but it is still hanging regularly. Here is my FEC

So last night i thought i would break my network into pieces to try to see what part is falling over.

With the ping numbers actually looking decent i thought it must be the routing bit that is causing the chaos.

I set my Technicolor to bridge mode and i have used a TPlink 1043 router to handle the rest.

My internet seems to be responding like a normal network again.

My hard wired pc is responsive and i was able to actually play BF3 without being kicked for about 20 mins (i was just testing) and my apple tv could actually stream part of a movie without hanging and crashing.

Our iPhones and my mac air and my wives iMac all seem to be responding normally again.

I will give it a few more days but it seems like i have finally solved this

If this is the actual solution there must be many more people out there with the same issue. I don't think i have an unusual number and variety of wifi devices connected to this technicolor modem/router. That said my windows 8 pc didn't work either.

I will keep you guys posted.
