surfisup1000: This is exactly why the ceo of telecom is overpaid.

They plod along, not really doing much with the business at all.

I don't even see that that last scottish guy did much at all to improve the business either. He took over when the company was going through natural evolution and some changes. but, that was just an exercise in administration.

I guess, telecom are just a utilities company and will never be much more than that.

With the likes of fiber and LTE telcos will just end up as dumb pipes..

I prefer to keep an open mind and not prejudge, I will wait and see what new initiatives come with the rebranding, I am sure it will be a relaunch as opposed to just a rebranding exercise . I feel that Showme TV is just a start.

JamesL: Gen-i's name hardly inspires good thoughts either, having worked there previously, maybe they should rename to Spark-i. I was at cland during the tail end of the merger and if anything it just killed the culture there :P

Oh, I know and agree. Hence why I am now with VF. :) But it originally gave me an opportunity to come to Auckland and get a lot more tech experience than I would have had with CL, so I'm not knocking it.

I'm interested in how the branding change will be received by school leavers and uni students. These are the kids that are about to become consumers and have heard Mum and Dad complain at the dinner table about the evils of Telecom. Arguably, all these subliminal 'bad feelings' in the young & restless can be side-stepped with a rebrand.

Well played and good luck I say!

Maybe the branding has been aimed at the younger generation. No expectations on a name!

I think the better idea would have been to move to "Spark Telecom" for a decade or so, then dump the "Telecom" eventually.. that way people would still know it was "Telecom"

Just like noone lost track of "Saturn" becoming "TelstraSaturn" becoming "TelstraClear"

Dratnz: Not the first time a big company changed their name and have become just as recognisable, if not more . Vodafone and fonterra for example.

I think if they change the name, they should change the logo too as it is now several years old, and reminds me of a muddle of wires. Also changing a company name and branding shouldn't cost millions, perhaps they need to look at using a boutique NZ company, especially as they are now a far smaller company than they once were. Spark to me though isn't the greatest name, as it is the sort of name an electrical company may use, not a communications one. It does sound like it has been thought  by a committee.
IMO the best companies don't change their name, as they are long time established brands that people trust.  Then example of VF and Fonterra are different, as one was after a larger company came onto the MS market, and the other was due to overseas expansion.

Telecom trying to reinvent themselves as fresh and funky and modern reminds me so much of this:

steve98: Anyone want to place bets on when Sky will react to this? Either price drops or sudden launch of a similar online streaming service or some other improvements?

It is all about content, and sky have much of it. So I can't see this as a threat. Companies may have the best delivery network but without the content that people want to watch, people won't use it.

Showmetv is going to have a hardtime as their pricing (unless it is subsidised by other telecom customers) can't compete with Free or Big market equivalents.

And unless they get first screening rights it is going to be even tougher.

I'm not that interested in the name change - rebranding is just money for old rope and it will help the local economy (please Telecom/Spark keep it domestic).

I want to know what the TV offering will be and how it will be delivered.  From what I remember they already have deals with Premier League Pass for re-selling - perhaps this was just a trial to see the uptake and technical requirements.  One thing that was mentioned with PLP would be what could happen to Sky if PLP got the rights to Rugby - who said that unbundling couldn't happen in NZ because it's too small?  It's happened in the UK with BT, Virgin and Sky (plus others I cant remember) all offering competing and complimenting services.

We have also been involved in helping to shape their new home router thing that is still in development - perhaps all the pieces are starting to fall into place.  All we need now is for Sky to enter the telecommunications market - perhaps they could call themselves 'Air'.

What I hope is that they provide a suite of products that people will actually use - full live domestic TV, full back-catalogue of shows on demand and obviously quality delivery and cheap data access.  Put this together in a new home router and PVR and they could be on to something.

I look forward to some updates :D

All licences have to renew sometime.  I think it's time for some non-exclusivity to come to NZ.
