That really doesn't address why one is being charged for national bandwidth - why not allow metered free local websites? if the site is locally hosted have some sort of 'logo' the end user can look for to confirm it is unmetered? why don't the ISP's offer a jointly funded 'mirror' project that mirrors high traffic sites to reduce international bandwidth use?

I'm sure there are any number of great reasons to have unmetered access to websites within NZ, however, there are still costs to get that traffic to your door.

exportgoldman:

But seriously I don't see why Telecom don't zero rate or close to zero rate traffic which is within Telecom's data centre like youtube and other cached stuff like tivo is.

The only reason I could see is if Telecom thought their users were not savvy enough to work it all out.

Roll on the new plans huh?

If Telecom wanted to zero rate on-net/local traffic they would, however they have invested in the caching equipment to reduce their costs of providing the service. The added speed it provides is just a bonus.

If they were truly concerned about the speed of content delivery then they would peer openly with every ISP in NZ, however they don't unless its in their best interest as it was with streeming content for the Olympics and LOTR.

I guess if every other ISP, or perhaps just Telstraclear and Vodafone zero rated their local traffic then perhaps they would follow suit, next Tui Ad?

At the end of the day, all the issues are caused by Telecom being a for profit company. They want to suck every last cent out of us to maximise profits, especially now that their historically disgusting profits on voice calls are falling.

It's yet another reason to lobby for Telecom to be forcibly (re-)nationalized, not as a traditional SOE but as a "for the benefit of the community" trust, like WEL Energy Trust. Returning profits to the community via annual rebates.

Just had a call from Telecom offering me their new 'Total Home Broadband' Package (I think), she said they are doubling my cap from 20GB to 40GB and it will cost me another $3.40 a month.

Starts Fri 3 December.

Are you sure that's not the GST price rise and the double your data for 6 months plan?

I don't know, but she didn't say it was limited, she said there was no contract and that Telecom was 'just meeting the growing needs of their customers'.

She said it was a new plan they were releasing...

Did they call or email you? I thought they would only call if they are upgrading you for free.

Something like this happened to me last year - telecom sales guy said I could be upgraded to 40gb for just a little extra money, and that it was a new plan that had just come out with no overage charges.

However, after the upgrade, found out they'd just switched me to the existing pro plan, which has overage charges .

Very deceptive sales techniques. I had it all reversed after I discovered the truth.

Doubt it's dodgy, there is another person who has had the same offer to join a pilot over on GP forums.

Telecom should have refreshed they plans for the GST increase, they are lagging competitors offerings quite a bit now.

I agree, after reading all your replys, I no longer feel like a traffic eater.  I really feel missed out here.  I use to be on Orcon and they have the o zone.  I could enjoy TVNZ on demand, when ever I wanted.  Now I switch to Telecom, and blow my cap within the first week of the month,  so can someone please tell me what is the point in all this cool stuff on the internet like Youtube, xbox live, TVNZ on demand, and other stuff like skype, when you would just eat away all your bandwidth within 1 week?  Please someone tell me NOW!  Because I'm seriously confused.

This isn't an attack @lac but if you're so unhappy about it, vote with your wallet and join another provider that gives you the value you want.

Then that means I would have to make my own ISP that offers unlimited broadband with no strings attached.
