All in its own merit...

I agree Telecoms T3G coverage is currently far better than Vodafones 3G coverage & the fallback to 1xRTT is much better than Vodafones GPRS speed.

But, Vodafones 3G coverage will increase & remember they were 9 months behind Telecom to start off with. It will be interesting to see the level of increased Vodafone 3G over the next 9-12 months.

The imminent arrival of Econet onto the market could be an interesting one, in the sense that Vodafone "could" co-habitat off Econet's nationwide cellsites? Or, do Econet only have to provide 10% national coverage & roam off Vodafone (being the only option for them)?

Vodafone are generally more expensive for mobile data until you use in excess of 220 megabytes a month (which the vast majority of mobile data users in NZ would not do at present).

There are several megabyte levels (I think it was 5, 6,7 and 8MB ??) that Voda are same price as TCom, but from there through to 220+ Telecom was cheaper.

This was at Voda 3G launch time (witht the new plans including the 1GB), so unless it has changed since then?

You have taken my post out of context to the discussion that I was having with Freitasm. We were discussing the viability of using a 3G Data Plan as an alternative to a fixed line, of which large amounts of data would more likely be used. When comparing the two networks, it's not viable at all, due to latency & very high cost.

However of the two, Vodafone is cheaper, especially with larger amounts of data eg Telecom charge $99 excluding GST for 400 MB PLUS .50 cents per MB after that. So, on Telecom you would end up paying $399 "excluding" GST for 1 Gig!

Vodafone charge $149 for 1 Gig excluding GST with no excess data usage, however this is subject to a fair use clause.

If we move up the rankings will we be more attractive to tourists, businesses or a higher standard of living.

Yes, I probably did.
Either way, I dont think its a viable idea at present (due to price), for anyone who uses lots of data (geeks, downloaders, gamers, music/movies etc etc), the only people that could get away with it are people who are seldom on the net, or use very little data (who are unlikely to have the know how or the inclination).

Hopefully prices fall further to the point where it can happen soon.

I couldnt live on 1GB or even 2 or 3.

Im sure there are a few who could, and they are probably already doing it.

There would be more benefits to this country by raising wages and lowering interest rates. Both areas we rate very poorly in the OECD.

Great streaming video - lets all throw out our Sky decoders. Just think there are pensioners who can't even afford heating. I guess they could toast marshmallows over there broadband router!

I note there are no negatives in the government broadband strategy. How about the amount of money that will flow out of this country to overseas suppliers - ebay, Amazon, etc. It all adds the negative balance of payments.

Could quite work out the quoting :) There is a comment on page 3 that the NGN will run over the current network setup.

I read on Computerworld early last year that Telecom is planning to phase out 2/3's (approx) of their exchanges in favour of new what I would call "Super Exchanges"
The idea is, they would service a fairly large area e.g 1 Exchange in Whangarei could do all of northland. What Telecom would do is run fibre optic links from the exchange to every road-side cabnet in the area, thats where the ADSL2+ DSLAMS would be. Guess that would be the answer to Telecom's bandwidth needs to run things like IP TV.

Yep - I would agree with that.

From what I know, they already have a lot of the fibre to the cabinets, as they have been putting it in for several years slowly. For the NGN, they just have to finish putting in all the fibre, which I have heard from one source (not official by any means) that Telecom may already have got all the fibre in.

Most of whats left is the installation of the new exchange equipment, which I think is also where most of the announced $1.4 billion is headed.

I wonder if all national calls would be free? currently by skyping, it is.
I'm seriously considering getting Point to point Wireless to replace woosh and getting a VoIP router. then I have access to all phone numbers for small charge, and friends/familty on Skype etc are free and no need to surrender my favourite cordless phone! it's the future....

Probably not the thread to post in, probably better creating another one.

Correct, this is absolutely, completely off-topic. Please create another thread - but just in case: how could one know about the plans and offers on a network that is not, as far anyone else knows, even close to operation?

Isn't that a little bit too early for calling plans and other related stuff to be available, from a company that's has not even rolled out a single cell site, as far as we all know?

About cokemaster's comments on Econet, well, that is public knowledge for years. I was just agreeing with him that the other post was OT.

We're talking about Telecom. Most of that is probably headed to another addle-brained marketing scheme.

They are supposed to be moving up to a IP-based exchange system in the very near future. But I am a huge cynic when it comes to anything planned by Telecom. They've successfully managed to disappoint me at just about every turn.
