So new twist (Link courtesy of Peter L of Peter Reader fame who posted it to the ISIG mailing list this morning)

The UK has now blocked Huawei from being part of the 5g core, and even further is now removing any Huawei equipment from the 3/4g core network too.

Well, that escalated quickly: Canadian authorities arrest CFO of Huawei Technologies at US request.

This seems to be over Iran sanctions violations.

Am I reading that it's all politically motivated?

Not necessarily. The USA takes sanctions very seriously. They could frame it as a criminal activity.

I see. But seeing that they are not putting any sanctions on Saudi anytime soon, Huawei should now sell stuff in Saudi instead.

And a non-paywalled version on NYT: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/05/business/huawei-cfo-arrest-canada-extradition.html

So really it's about the trade violations for selling to Iran.

Given their buddy-buddy relationship with the US, why would Saudi do anything with Huawei...??

.....and just to make the story even more interesting,  Huawei's CFO is the Company founder's Daughter....

Yeah, Spark, Voda and 2D should just get a stack of Ettus USRP and run OpenBTS and tell those hardware providers to stick it.... as running a mobile network with SMS/SMPP interconnect, roaming capabilities and band steering is easy open source hardware and software so anyone can do it.

Why should Saudi care about the US? They are the ones with the money, they can buy from whomever the help they like

I actually meant develop their own brand of [Enterprise grade] telecommunications electronics and software - not open source.

I think the local electronics companies could do with a boost from the goverment to help them develop the skills and talent and enterprise experience needed to develop such an internationally competitive product- even if it would take a few decades.
