@hio77

I just received the email below. Is it legit? Looks dodgy and dangerous.

I think this is getting out of hand and I’m getting sick of it. Have tried to be patient but I’m getting this spam at an increasing frequency - now a very dangerous-looking one purporting to be from xtra itself.

I’m currently out of NZ for an extended period and I can’t easily call Spark/xtra. If I was at home I’d be on the phone complaining. I have been with Spark/xtra all my electronic life and pay a decent monthly charge for phone/broadband/email. When I get home, if this hasn’t been sorted, I will change my supplier for all this.

I’m not too interested in solutions that say ‘forward via gmail’ or whatever - I’m paying Spark for a package of services and I expect it to work properly.

Good indicators are the poor English and bad formatting. You can easily identify phishing from these.

In hindsight you’re obviously correct but it’s not always that clear at a first glance. I’ve had some purporting to be from IRD that looked incredibly convincing.

Surely the point is: if xtra’s spam filter was working properly, none of this would be an issue and there wouldn’t be any need for a first glance.

I have to wonder if some of you are on a system that's had a more recent userbase breach. I use to get all the coupon/survey scams galore. They eventually stopped. But so far have have NONE of these xtra impersionation ones

Zip, nada. Not even captured into the spam folder itself. Just the odd IRD one during Jan.

The frequency you are getting them per day, makes me wonder if you have a common account held and details have only recently been leaked and there are multiple VPS sources attempting to use known valid addresses all of a sudden

Obviously I don’t know a lot about all this but I suspect you’re spot-on here. I have been thinking along these lines. I was also getting all those coupon scams and they have stopped like yours.

Spark's Filters never seem to work for me either.

I set up a filter to move to Spam folder - doesn't work. Tried reject with reason too - doesn't work. I hit Blacklist and Report as Spam. Still doesn't work. These Spam from info@ee.spark.co.nz just keep coming no matter what I do to try and stop them.

Other filtering I've tried over the last couple of years also failed to work.

What's the point of having filters if they just don't work?

Just to offer an alternative to the prevailing views in this thread, I posted early on about my spam issues. @hio77 picked it up quickly and sorted some issue out in the background. While it may just be a coincidence, I don't recall getting any spam through my account since then, so thank you for that.

The folk on the backend do try hard on these.

the ee spark address has been quite a troublesome one, we are going down another path to sort those now.

I'm often just the middle man, the folk that work with SMX on this do an amazing job..
