Hmmm... So if my phone was WCDMA 2100 but not WCDMA 850, does this mean I'd get perfectly good coverage in the major cities, but no coverage elsewhere?

Does this mean I could have two simcards, a Vodafone one for when I was outside cities (rarely) and a Telecom one for when I wasn't?

@fraseyboy. The coverage for WCDMA2100 at XTNetwork launch is limited. i.e not all major cities. This is because TelecomNZ only needs WCDMA2100 for capacity reasons (when we get lots of customers) not coverage. WCDMA850 covers the whole coverage area.

It looks like they have updated their www.testdrive.co.nz website now with more information, and a very teasing 'become a test driver - coming soon' option.

And a countdown timer till launch hour.

XT NETWORK UPDATE FROM TESTDRIVE.CO.NZ:
OFFICIAL - NETWORK LAUNCH DAY CONFIRMED

At testdrive.co.nz, you asked to be kept updated on the latest news about the XT Mobile Network.

It's official – it's almost here. The world class 3G mobile network is launching ahead of schedule, with the launch date accelerated to 6.30pm on 13 May 2009 – just two weeks away.

Following widespread speculation about the dates and about who was behind the XT Mobile Network launch, it was confirmed today by Telecom CEO Dr Paul Reynolds.

He announced that the development of the XT Mobile Network had progressed extremely well and the service will be operational across the country from launch day.

"This will mean world class 3G mobile service is available, for the first time, in 97% of places where Kiwis live and work."

"Telecom will also now provide New Zealand's premium overseas roaming
service with seamless international roaming to more than 190 destinations for voice calling and SMS and at least 110 destinations for mobile data," Dr Reynolds said.

He also said that the new network will open up a whole new range of mobile handsets and services for customers.

Get ready to put it to the test. Go to www.testdrive.co.nz for more information as it's posted, or stand by for the latest updates and opportunities for you to test drive the new network.

I don't get it - why are people signing up to the email spam list? Especially people from GZ?
Why give your email to a email marketer?
What information are you expecting to receive that you won't get simultaneously everywhere else?

Also - why would anyone rush to get on the new network at 630pm when it launches? I know it is a nerdy thing to do, but really - this isn't the iPhone - it's just a network. From Telecom.

Oh - 630pm is surely timed for a live cutover from the 6pm news.

I expect to see the iPhone guy at the front of the queue again.

Its not a spam list since they are getting email verification and have an opt out link. A company as large as telecom would _never_ risk being called spammers by operating outside the scope of what is allowable. IMO giving them the address is perfectly safe and to call it a spam list is IMO bordering on libel...

I didn't realise that the voluntary registration to receive email updates... is now called spam?

The reason why we do ** voluntarily opt in** to receive such notifications.. is so one doesn't have to go searching for it... seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

Most people are pulled into all the marketing hence why they sign up in anticipation of the launch. Obviously this isn't you and I understand that not everyone responds to these strategies but it may be of use to you to try and understand the mindset of someone whom this really excites...

just because u cant b bothered doesnt mean it shud b the same for evryone out here. a lot of ppl are fed up of the services provided by the major GSM provider here. i can say this is the telecom equivalent of the CHANGE we have been waiting for so long over here. I know this is not as good as NZ comms launching but nonetheless i see thers gonna be more competition and more ppl jumping the boat - even though in unknown waters but just to get a feel of what is like to have freedom of switching providers ...

as about me i dont have a 3g phone right now, but if i can get my hands on a good one, i might as well be in the Que for the new network.

I signed up to ensure I recieve complete information, in case I happen to miss it elsewhere - I dont watch a lot of TV, and contrary to popular belief, you cannot always trust everything you read on the internet.

Email marketers having my email address? This is Telecom New Zealand. If you ask them to stop emailing you, you can bet your bottom dollar they will. The powers that be would love to take a prominent NZ company to task for spamming.
