Youtube (Google) keeps their videos all over the place - so depending on how popular (and how popular in what Geo area) a video is, it might come from NZ, AU, Asia, the US or Europe. The trick I pointed out above for disabling DASH playback is helpful if you want to view a slow (downloading) hidef video in that you can start and pause, then wait for it to buffer enough....

It is only a band aid though - I'll ask around and see if there's anything we can do on our end... We are however limited in what we can do when it comes to individual providers and their choice of where to serve from.

Cheers - N

would be great Neil if there is something that can be done as now its Monday and good old youtube is now unwatchable - ie: it cant stream a vid in 480 without stuttering and pausing. Previously on DSL it wasnt this bad.

Maybe its heavier network traffic with people back at work and im in the city area ? Also interestingly the speed test is down to 19mb from a peak of 40mb +.

Why the variation ? is it a characterisitic of VDSL ?  VDSL seems to me like having a fast car but with a very slow 0-100k time and unfortunately its the 0-100 where i spend most of my time.

any help would be appreciated as the wife is breathing fire at me (she watches her countries tv programs on YT every night)

You are testing over an ethernet connection, not wireless, right? Just making sure...

I have had no problem streaming anything off Youtube, even some fairly niche stuff.

i think andrew027 have problems with something else, i think it's not router trouble.  Also check your site, there can be a lot of wireless points and they can create a collision, try to change channel or frequency. I have found that tompson routers which telecom given on 2009-2011 connections configured for channel 6 of 802.11b/g. In central city(for example apartment building): there are HEAPS of access points with channel 6 configured, if you will use channel 6 you will have bad performance, if you will use channel 1-3, you will have much better performance, up to 70% better. So same problem can be with your wifi connection.

And basically wireless is $hit, use cables.

Sorry I haven't been on here for a while - my recent work schedule has had me out and about and seriously interferred with my personal internet time!

A couple of things:

My preference would be to use the cable for the desktop and just use wireless for the family phones and tablets, but unfortunately my existing phone sockets are not in places where I want to put the PC. The router is on the closest socket to the PC, but plugging in would require runiing the cable across the busiest hallway in the house - and I'm not a fan of putting cables under rugs. I asked the guy who did the VDSL install if he could add a socket near the PC (I was prepared to pay extra for it) but it couldn't be done.

And about week after I made my previous post, I fixed the problem (sorry I didn't let you know earlier, but work schedule, blah blah blah). Before running the tests, I went around all the devices in the house and turned off wifi, except for the Canon wireless printer, which I powered off. Unfortunately, after I had hit the power button, I waited until I saw the on-screen message saying it was powering off, then walked away. But it didn't power off. The "wireless activity" LED on the router, which was constantly blinking, about twice a second, all the time, seemed to be some kind of permanent "polling" by the printer. So when I needed to print something (which I don't do every day) I finally noticed the printer was not working, unplugged it from the wall, plugged it back in and powered it up, and boom - wireless problem all gone.

I'm from Invercargill btw. Heres a speedtest to auckland Auckland Speedtest

Also I was wondering how could I fix the wifi on this Technicolor TG589vn v2. Whenever I have more than a few devices connected it slows down to 5mbs.

I have plenty of spare routers but how do I set one up to go properly with it?

Got myself a ethernet to usb adaptor for my macbook air so that takes another device off the wifi. Hopefully that helps. Plus I now get the full 34/10 on the telecom speedtest.

Yes!! Finally getting VDSL2 installed this Thursday afternoon after over a month long wait for work to be done on the roadside cabinet - apparently I'm the first on that cabinet to get VDSL2 hence the delay :S

Current speeds on ADSL2+ @ 650m from cabinet
13.5 Mbit down
0.89 Mbit up

You're a similar distance as me, and getting about the same ADSL speeds as I was before the upgrade. I've been on VDSL about 6 weeks now and am getting 25-30 down and 8-9 up (measured wirelessly).
