Sigh

1: It's a spam list. It may be opt-in, but 'Spam' is used (also) as a generic name for stuff that corporates send. It's a bit tongue in cheek when we do so, but I've been inside a few corporates and folks have no problem using the term. It's actually smart to do so as it is a reminder of what not to do.

Regardless of what it is called you've just given your email address to someone that really wants to sell you something, abrogating your position of power as an impartial consumer. Sure it isn't that harmful but...

2: If you are on Geekzone (and especially if you are are one of the 5 people that replied after 1230pm, one even within 5 minutes of my comment), then signing up to a Telecom email service just seems so out of kilter with everything geek. If you are that active then you'll get the news in lots of different ways, including from the email sent to you from this or another geekzone thread when the next announcement is posted. So you've needlessly given out your email address and added to your inbox.

3: The rational thing to do is to wait until all networks are rolled out, prices and performance are discussed, mulled and opinions formed here on GZ and other forums and then make a move.

sep11guy: just because u cant b bothered doesnt mean it shud b the same for evryone out here. a lot of ppl are fed up of the services provided by the major GSM provider here.

Next time you post, please find a dictionary as txt speak is annoying to read when you have a full keyboard at your disposal.  It's also against the FUG.

Most would define spam as unsolicated electronic communication and whoever signed up to the list is obviously soliciting any electronic communication from Telecom in regards to XT.

Also not everyone is completely rational hence why marketing campaigns such as these can be effective. A key weakness of the rational person is the inability to understand not everyone is as rational as they are!

I only call spam when the email is unsolicited commercial messages (you signup for a competition and then start getting "updates", or your address is haversted from webpages). Signing up to email is not spam in my books.

Also if you sign up for a newsletter on a website, then after receiving five messages you started saying "All this spam" is over the top - just go and click the unsubscribe link (since you subscribed yourself then you should trust the source).

Agreed. You will probably hear it here first...

Hmm, who is forming the opinions?

I believe it's "us".

Am I to infer that you are one of "them"?

Also, excuse me not quoting the phrase referring to rationality from the same post, but an inherent construct of rational thought appears to me to be acceptance of the existance of what is not rational. This doesn't make what is not rational good or bad, it just makes it another face of the coin.

So I think some of us are quite reasonably entitled to express opinions that might be viewed by some others as irrational. Within the FUG provisos of course.

Cool

Note I have added a XT Network FAQ thread - no discussions there, just questions.

Not to me. I skipped over your post because after attempting to read half of the first sentence I decided I would have to spend more effort parsing your words than actually thinking about whatever your point was.  Writing proper sentences with correct punctuation and spelling helps you to be a better communicator - and gets your point across.

This is the basic conversation I had with them...
Me: Why did you cut off my phone.
Vodafone: Your credit card payments bounced.
Me: My last card expired, I phoned you 2 months ago.  You wouldn't take my new credit card details over the phone (unlike my other utilities). So, you sent me a letter which I returned to you immediately.
Vodafone: We didn't process your new credit card details in time.
Me: Well, how was I supposed to know this, you don't send out invoices?
Vodafone: Ahhhh.... Not sure..... Uhhh, we'll reconnect your phone if you make a one off payment.
Me: OK, just put it through on my new credit card.
Vodafone: Your phone will be reconnected in 5 minutes.
12 hours later, phone still not connected, new call to vodafone.
Me: why is my phone not connected.
Vodafone: Your credit card payment bounced..............
Me: here we go again.

Sorry, this has long gone but I couldn't help but comment ..... Bloody funny.

it has been comfirmed the W995 is being sold on purchase on site in sony stores in taiwan and hongkong. If exchanged to nz dollars it is exactly $942 RRP...and prices should drop once they are released, as they don't usually sell at rrp due to competition...so if anymore than $1000 in NZ, we're all getting ripped off again here in NZ

Cellphones are always significantly more expensive in NZ than in asia. The last one I imported from Singapore (about 4 years back) cost me roughly $600 (including shipping and duty if I had to pay any, which I don't recall needing to do), retail in NZ was something like $950. Just look at the current price disparity between what Vodafone list phones for and what they're available for via Paralell imports etc. (e.g. N96 for $1200 Vs. $1700)

Obviously you "miss out" on the Vodafone Live features (which I couldn't care less about, YMMV) and you basically say goodbye to any form of support, but I suspect many people would rather save the 20-30%).

Is there actually a legitimate reason for the high prices for cellphones in NZ other than the Telco's just trying to maximise profit?  Again it's hard to quantify the charges for Telecom's CDMA phones as the models are so limited in their availability. XT will be a different story. We'll be able to do some direct comparison in 11 days anyway.

One reason might be so they can significantly sweeten the deal by selling them a lot "cheaper" but tied into a long contract, more money in it for them in the long run.

Support I have had in NZ for hardware from either of the telcos has consisted of sending a phone off after paying a fee, and having them either want to charge me for a software update (was before being able to do it yourself on some handsets) or else declaring it dropped or water damaged, so IMO its worthless compared to the alleged runaround that parallel imported places give you, which seemed to be better at the end of it.

Will be interesting to see what the PI type places end up doing with 850 capable phones, they have some already but they are not marking them or anything.
