woody53: Mainstream media have reported it and geekzone is mentioned.....We all know some posters have the ear of telecom and we also know some posters livelihoods are from telecommunications

There is enough acid on telecom to get this right without so called experts from the media.

The media keeps coming up with the 6 to 2 RNC comparison as the reason for evey telecommunications issue in the country, maybe it's just not that simple .....

Telecom have the most to lose in all of this, loss of revenue, share price, lack of take up and the list goes on.

I think we need to wait for the independent review to start playing the blame game

if you wanted to know what the problem was telecom are blaming "an unusual pattern of text messaging traffic for the disruption." so there you go people its the customers fault for texting incorrectly.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Ok, received the update on this:

Obviously the reason we’re doing the [external] review is to ask those questions – what’s going on/where is the problem – but there’s also a whole lot of planned work going on at the same time as the review is underway. Naturally the results of the review will feed into this, but we’re getting on with things in the meantime, all of which will help to improve user experience.

Paul talked a fair bit about this at our Q2 results last week, here’s a summary of what he discussed at the results preso:

• We’re increasing the RNC processor capacity
• We’re regularly installing updates to the software to improve resilience
• We also had some things in the plan as the number subscribers on the network grew. This is all going to occur over the next few months which will further improve resilience and the customer experience
• We’ll also be adding two more RNCs by March – another one in CHCH and another one in AKL
• We’re adding more fibre backhaul
• We’re adding more cell sites, and we’re amplifying some cell sites too

Alongside that we’ve gone absolutely microscopic on the operational management of the network, which is being continually monitored right down to cell site by cell site level at the very highest levels of the company.

As Paul’s said - XT was built to be a world class network and that’s what it needs to be – we’re determined to get it there and it’s absolutely the number one focus at the company right now, as you would expect.

XT sounds like a big FAIL.

All they can do is improve from here, it seems that adding a huge number of clients is causing growing pains. Perhaps they should have built the redundancy before they piled hundreds of thousands of people on to it.

Don't tell me they already have, this is BS that there is constantly issues. Im glad I moved away from XT, I was with it on day1 and it only got worse! I left 2 weeks ago to 2degrees, I can send and receive all my texts fine. Many many times on XT text messaging were not working, Not only this but I had MANY outages that were never reported!

exportgoldman: The question that still stumps me is if Telecom did buy such a world class network how come they didn't use IP to the cell sites, so they could reroute and load balance RNC controllers instead of using older emulated? cirtcuit switched connections. That still puzzles me.

And.. how many networks around the world are currently doing this?

I have no idea :) I'm not a mobile network designer, but it sounds like a good feature to have the flexability to reroute NodeB's to alternative RNC's in your network when RNC's seem to be such a problematic part for mobile network operators worldwide. The old telephone exchanges in the 80's could automatically hand calls off to each other and reboot with no downtime, but we seem to have moved forward 30 years and back about 10 for functionality with no option until very recently for RNC's.

As part of a 'world class network' I thought that they would have built it with IP backhaul even if they did not initially use this functionality but I guess it all comes back to the telco/isp smart/dumb network debate and the Telco's love for their ATM switched networks.

I wonder why they don't just amplify all their cell sites instead of some. Anyone know why?

Maybe because there is no need to?

A MHA can actually impact of the capacity of a cell because it has to use more power to support devices that are further away. Particularly in built up areas sites are only designed to support a small area.

It is not some magic device that you fit to to every site that magically fixes every problem known to man and makes you coffee and eggs for breakfast!

Maybe the country keeps asking the question because the people who should understand these complex networks can't keep them online and are sick of their cellphones not working (and I'm not just talking XT here either.)

But you have to ask yourself if 2 Degree's has 2 RNC's for their test network, and Telecom had budgeted for more RNC's and are now hurrying out to get more RNC's and upgrade their existing ones, then how far off the mark is everyone who is talking about more RNC's?

Sure it's not the only problem, but it sure helps keep problems localized.

I imagine the XT techs have the south RNC serial number memoried for those service calls, every problem thus far has started off with 'mobiles taupo and south...' Hmmmmm.
