Anyone had any experience of this? My broadband account with Telecom has been slammed, and I have been advised that it is going to happen again tomorrow! I am gobsmacked to say the least. Anyone out there got any advice?

A "slammed" account is when it is transferred to another provider *WITHOUT* the account holder authorisation.

It is a nightmare when it happens because the previous provider can't give any information to where the account is going due to "privacy act". Believe it or not. It's like hijacking your account.

Good luck with finding out the new provider.

Did they tell you which company took over the account?

Telecom at the moment are unable to tell us who has taken the account...But wait there is more, the slamming happened two weeks ago and is about to happen again, tomorrow. AND Telecom are unable to stop it!!

They may be unable to stop it (and I'm sure that someone more knowledgeable than I would confirm/deny), but I would have thought they would have a process to establish who the connection is being transferred to via their wholesale provider (Chorus).

Nope, apparently it is not legal. Telecom have told me that the wholesaler (Chorus) will not release the details of who has taken the account due to the privacy laws. I'm no legal expert but surely it is my privacy that has been breached here and as such, should be entitled to know who has done the breaching??

Surely telecom can only allow people that are authorised to make changes to your account, to make those changes, and they must have mechanisms in place to police it. Sounds like you have been a victim of fraud. Perhaps you ned to lay a compliant to the police and the privacy commissioner about it, as it sounds like someone may have illegally got access to your account details.

IANAL, however, people do often seem to quote the Privacy Act as a blanket "we aren't telling you" excuse, when in actual fact you may be entitled to that information.

I would suggest politely speaking to a supervisor at Telecom (they are your ISP, and you have a contract with them), and getting them to push the issue a bit harder with Chorus - specifically if they are not telling you due to a "privacy law", what specific law / section are they referring to...
