Hi There,

Just want to find out what ISP has the best international speed. I don't mind paying extra for it.

Has any one got some speed test results to the west coast of the USA on telecom ufb?

Have been a Orcon customer in the past but I'm just over their customer service..

Thanks Sam

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

We consistently do pretty well and punch well above our weight in regards to speed and customer experience.

Any particular servers you're looking for a speed test off?  As I have a few colleagues on the UFB service already and can get them to take speed tests.  But I would have expected that a DSL line with interleaving off would be pretty similar to the line speeds you would get on UFB.

Telecom, Snap and Vodafone/TelstraClear are my favourites as ISP. Premium bandwidth as I like to call it via any of these.

Only Telecom and Snap have UFB offering out of the above choices so you will have to check whether they offer UFB in your area.

Do whatever you want to do man.

I'm surprised with the latency on the telecom speed test and how good the xnet one was.

I would off thought that telecom owning the southern cross cable that they would have a better performance..

Is there any point getting a 100/50Mbps UFB connection when 95% websites / services i use are all hosted off shore.  And all the speed test max out at 10Mbps.. Would i see any difference on the 30/10 connection?

Thanks Sam

ISPs invest a shedload in caching,  so things like youtube, lots of pron,  torrents etc etc  get brought over to NZ so NZers can access them as if they were local, which is awesome!

I thought about just getting the 30/10 as well, but while the data is essentially unlimited I figured the entry level 100/50 plan would be nice for the reason already stated (full speed to caches) a speed test for me using the Telecom hosted node is 94/45, the first night I had it I installed my entire steam library, just because I could.

I would also include where in NZ you're based... As those in the south island or even Wellington will get an extra few ms on latency than those in Auckland.
