Was looking at getting one of these for the mother in law as she wan't to get into the smartphone brigade.  Nice price at $199.  Also known as the Huawei Ascend Y300.  Mixed reviews on GSM Arena.

TIA

I guess due to the lack of replies that no one has seen this fone.

I went and bought one from the Telecom store at Bayfair today for the mother-in-law. For $199 it's good value and relatively easy to setup. I assume this fone is pure Android 4.1.1 ??

Now all I need to do is find a case for it and some backup software. The Huawei site only has the fone software software and nothing about this fone on their NZ website..

One of the team at work bought the Y300 a few days ago. I had a quick play with it and overall it seems like a really good handset $199 (prepay).

I'm not sure about whether it'll be upgraded beyond Android 4.1.

He's very happy with it.

pretty good value @ $199 .
Had a quick play in store

Nice phone , user interface is abit ugly. A launcher can change this though.
dual core + ICS , cant really go wrong with the price aswell.

The only issue I have struck is with the Swiftkey paid version. It will not load on reboot. Apparently it's a know problem with Android 4.1.1 . Woks on the 30 day free trial OK. Swiftkey should have a bug fix out soon they say..

I have found one other annoying quirk with this fone. When you have 3G and WiFi both turned on and leave the WiFi zone 3G gets turned off until you unlock by going OK to the popup that says something like " You have left the WiFi zone and you will need to use data, press OK to turn on data" If you get a call and swipe to unlock you can end up canceling this popup and data is then turned off until you manually turn it back on again so you won't get anything that uses data like MMS, WhatsApp etc. Not the best for a 73 year old who is not tech savvy..

Found the backup software but it doesn't work on USB unless you turn on 3G debug mode. Works fine on WiFi..

Just ordered one - I've been in the market for a v4+ android phone after my (admittedly disappointing) first experience with a cheapie android, and can't really argue with the price.

I have bought 1 of these for trial and it has been a great hand set.

BUT  I have got an issue currently where some incoming calls go straight to voice mail even though the handset has 4-5 bars on it. Working through this currently and next step replace with new one).

- I would been interested to know if any of you have had this issue or not. Either way would appreciate a YAH or NAY.

Also I thought this thread may be interested on my feed back over next few weeks as I have just bought another 24 of them today so I am sure if it is a problem with Y300 then we will know soon.

I have also purchased for 19.95 the ULTIMO jelly case and screen protector.  Was quite impressed with the quality/feel of this.

Where did you get the case from??

My mother-in-law was who I bought one for .  Apart from the items above I posted.  No 3G  after leaving WiFi area  unless you turn it back on manually  and Swiftkey paid version will not load on reboot.   I hope  Swiftkey  has been fixed with the  update yesterday.  At $199 or less it's good value..  She hasn't complained about the problem you mention..

Opps, was supposed to add:
bought from http://www.totalnetwork.co.nz/ but as they are telecom dealer a telecom shop should have them.
Not too bulky and not sticky so it nicely slips into pocket or handbag without catching.

Thanx for the info. I'll look them up. The Telecom store i bought the Y300 from didn't have them but it may have been a bit early as the fone had just been released..
