Hi - just had Telecom VDSL installed (wanted upload speed for slingbox - spend a lot of time overseas). However, seems even though I have good down and up speed, video on my iPad (download, not slingbox/upload)is really still slow and buffers terribly. I am wondering if WMM/QOS is the problem on the new Technicolor router. BUT - can't seem to turn it off at all. Anyone know if I'm on the right track, or how to try this?

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

How is your wifi strength?
How is it from a wired connection to the router?

WiFi is excellent.

No problem with anything except iPad streaming. All other streaming (Mac, PC) is fine. VDSL on iPad ruunning speedtest shows 20 down, 9 up, so that isn't the problem.

I have noticed in some discussions elsewhere that people have seen this problem and rectified it by turning QOS/WMM off - so wanted to try that, but cannot change that setting through the TG589VN interface

If you can't do it via the GUI, then via CLI is always an option.
When other people have reportedly done this, have they used the CLI? Even if it is a different model of technicolor, the CLI is nearly identical (in terms of commands, structure etc).

Isn't the setting for this under Toolbox or something equally derp in the GUI?

No luck deep in the toolbox. I can see where it is specified as enabled, but when I go into configure, there is no option.

I expect it will need to be done through the CLI, but that sort of scares me - I have no idea how to do that, nor where to find the on/off setting I need. I found a manual for the router, but its way more complicated than I expected - definitely not a simple QOS enable/disable.

Can't guarantee disabling it will work, and change these settings at your own risk ...

If you telnet into the device (if using WinXP or earlier - use PuTTY or similar for Vista/7/8), use username: "Administrator", password is blank.

The following command will disable what you were after:

wireless qos config mode=disabled

However, if video is working over wifi for other devices, I wouldn't have thought that this would make a difference at all ...

Yep - quite right....

Managed to disable it and made not a bit of difference. Oh well, not sure what the problem can be, but I will learn to live with it, I guess. Thanks very much for the help - at least I learnt some stuff!
